Colin Matthews explains, “The rules of A Musical Dice Game – first published in 1793 and ascribed to Mozart as K. 516f (with more than a little likelihood of authenticity) – allow for the throw of the dice to determine the order of 176 bars of given musical material, so organized as to produce each time by chance a 16-bar waltz. Obviously the rules have to be strictly obeyed if the waltz is to come out right. Although I have obeyed the rule – except for the fact that I used randomly-generated numbers instead of throwing the dice 176 times to get my eleven variations – I’ve also applied further random operations in variations 4, 6, 8, 10 and 11; allowed for the dice to fall sixteen times in succession on ‘8’ in variation 7; and subjected the instrumentation to chance in variation 10.”

According to the composer, “This piece was originally composed with the acoustics of the Vancouver Art Gallery Rotunda in mind. From the composer’s website: The first movement could safely be called a passacaglia, save for an interlude and the ending in which the theme is inverted for the first time. The theme itself is built on an alternation between whole and semi-tones and between a minor and a major seventh. While the first movement exploits the sustained, lyrical qualities of the instruments, the second exploits their secco and satiric possibilities. One programmatic touch involves a raucous trombone heard near the beginning of the second movement. It reminded me of that overly loud and drunken voice so often heard over the din of a cocktail party in its later stages.

Robert McBride was both a composer and a performer on oboe, clarinet and saxophone for both jazz, theatrical and classical ensembles. In 1941 he toured South American with the League of Composers Woodwind Quintet and it appears that the Cuatro Milpas would have been written specifically for that tour. That quintet included five composer-players: David Van Vactor, flute, Alvin Etler, oboe; McBride on clarinet, Adolph Weiss, bassoon, and John Barrows, horn. [ Andrew Brandt ]

I believe the woodwind quintet listed here is by the McDaniel who was a Fulbright Scholar, active as a conductor on Broadway, a composer, and performer with the Antara Ensemble in New York City. The recordings are now available on YouTube. After a listen, I found the 2 movements (one slow-ish, one fast-ish), to be pleasant and well-crafted biographical essays on two friends of the composer, but nothing terribly exciting, either (although the last few bars rev up to something interesting). Written for professional quintets, this suite includes virtuosic solo work for most of the ensemble (most notably for flute, oboe, B^♭ clarinet and, in the finale, E^♭ clarinet). Rubato is required for solos and is written in for the entire ensemble as well. A feel for South American musical style certainly wouldn’t hurt. With its popular music roots, the work is also a crowd-pleaser. Highly recommended. [ Andrew Brandt ]

It is divided into four parts: Preludio, Jota, Muñeira and Bulería, each of which has characteristics of different folk dances from the Spanish geography: the jota from Aragon and Castilla, the muñeira from Galicia, and the bulería from Andalusia; The prelude also contains musical elements from southern Spain.” Further notes on the composer’s website explain that the members of the quintet also supply some percussive effects for the different dances (representing castanets, tamborine and foot-stomps).

Each reference to a work titled “Serenade” by “Menter” offers a slightly different title or a different orchestration, ranging from quintet to septet. This might be the same Serenade published by Andraud under the name “Menter” (no first name given), even though that is listed as a sextet for quintet and 2^nd clarinet. Previously, I thought that edition was by Sophie Menter (who was possibly Carl’s sister), but that seems less likely, now. This could easily be solved by going to the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, exhuming their copy of the serenade, then digging up an early Andraud publication of Serenade, and then comparing the two sources.

This quintet is based on the incidental music Milhaud wrote for the film Cavalcade d’Amour, for which Milhaud worked with fellow composers Arther Honegger and Roger Désormière. The screenplay by Jean Anouilh and Jean Aurenche included three love stories in three centuries: Medieval, 1830 and 1930. The three composers divided up the episodes and Milhaud wrote the music for the Medieval one. The reference to King René appears not to have been part of the movie. ¶ Movements: Cortège; Aubade; Jongleurs; La Mausinglade; Joutes sur l’arc; Chassse à Valabre; Madrigal nocturne. Flute doubles on piccolo. The quintet’s title refers to the legend of 15^th century King René of Provence. ¶ Surprisingly, according to the resources of IRCAM, the premiere performance of this work was by the South Wind Quintet (possibly a student ensemble) at Mills College in Oakland, California on March 6, 1941, where Milhaud taught during the war years. You can listen to a beautiful recording of each of the movements on the Dorian Wind Quintet site.

My old paperback French/English dictionary translates Cheminée as “chimney”, but Chemin as “road” or “path.” So English-language publishers of this quintet have long titled the work as “The Chimney of King René,” which has never made sense. Online French-English dictionaries also define the word “cheminée” as ‘fireplace,” so the better translation would seem to be “The Fireplace of King René.” This is confirmed in a Wikipedia article about the quintet, explaining that the title is based on an old Provençal saying that Milhaud would have learned in his childhood, “se chauffer à la cheminée du roi René” or to “Warm up at King René’s fireplace,” which may include a pun of sorts on chimney, fireplace and road. This visualizes the idea of a suite of musical stories being told in front of a blazing fireplace on a cold winter evening (which could never, never be done on a chimney). ¶ The king referred to in the title is René of Anjou (1409-1480), who was not king of France but briefly King of Naples, as well as Duke of Anjou and Count of Provence. He retired in Aix-en-Provence (the same town where Milhaud later spent his childhood) where he wrote several works, including a treatise on how to hold a tournament, and was known for supporting troubadours, singers, actors, artists and poets. Centuries later he was dubbed “René the Good.” Incidentally, the Wikipedia article about René briefly mentions the quintet and also translates the title as “The Fireplace of King René.” ¶ Personal confession: After playing this work with several student and young professional quintets I found myself completely bored with this quintet. After a break of about 15 years, our quintet returned to it and we found the piece to be entirely charming, seemingly easy to play but hard to play well (especially at the marked tempos). There are also several recording on Youtube, including one by Ventus Quintett Salzburg. Duration: 11:30.

Based on a few listenings, this appears to be an attractive, “serious” concert piece ideal for professional or advanced student quintets. It’s very tonal without anything terribly revolutionary harmony-wise, with enough technical challenges for all the players to keep it interesting. [ Andrew Brandt ]

As the natural settings of the movement titles imply, these are beautiful, tonal, inventive, pensive pieces for quintet. No high-flying fireworks, but solos for everybody. After several listenings, the work sounds appropriate for advanced student or professional quintets. Stylistically, the work reminds me of the pastoral American ethos of Barber’s and Persichetti’s quintets. Worth adding to your repertoire! [ Andrew Brandt ]

William Henry Monk was an Anglican organist, choirmaster, composer and music editor. He was instrumental in introducing plainchant into Anglican/Episcopal services and organized hymns according to the liturgical season, things that are now standard in many Christian denominations. His hymn tune, “Eventide” was used for the hymn “Abide with Me,” and several other hymn texts, including “Gethsemane,” “Ascension,” and “St. Denis.” Wikipedia has a good article about Monk and links to many other resources. Arianna was a 1608 opera by Monteverdi. Grove Music Online offers an entire paragraph of his biography to its composition, even though Arianna’s Lament is the only part of the score that has survived. Soprano Virginia Ramponi Andreini reportedly moved her audiences to tears with this piece.

Montsalvatge, Xavier (1912-2002)

According to Grove Music Online, In the 1930s, in both Paris and Barcelona there was a new interest towards African-American music from the West Indies and Cuba and, through performances by American contralto Marian Anderson, Negro spirituals. (Darius Milhaud’s music was also influential.) Montsalvatge composed 5 Canciones Negras (Black Songs) which brought him international attention. Unfortunately, library references for this publication don’t offer titles for these songs, or even offer which language they’re in. But with the resurgence of interest in African-American music, it might be worth somebody digging up this arrangement or making new ones. (It appears that Peermusic #PMC2225 publishes the original voice and piano version of Montsalvatge’s work, but not this arrangement.) [ Andrew Brandt ]

Cane (2008)

Written for the Imani Winds and recorded by them on their 2010 album, Terra Incognita, Cane is about Marie Thérèse Metoyer (African name: Coincoin) (1742-1816), a slave (later freed), planter and businesswoman, and Moran’s subsequent family history in the Cane River area of Natchitoches Parish, in northwest Louisiana.

Arthur Cohn calls this “Romantically styled music… with clear rhythms and shapes that stay in place.” The Finale is a Theme and Variations which features subgroups of the full quintet.

Quintett (1968) [??] (no opus number)

This 1968 Blaaskwintet, without opus number, is a bit of a mystery. It is listed in two sources (Wikipedia(Dutch) and a University of Hamburg biography as an addition to the above 2 works. There is a very good chance it was a reissue of the 1963 Quintet or simply a cataloguing error. Some catalogs list Op. 169 as a 1968 composition instead of 1963. Or, less likely, it really was a third quintet intended for publication at the end of Moritz’s life, that never made it to the publisher. [ Andrew Brandt ]

The work calls for an optional narrator (not necessarily an actor), or the hornist has the option of narrating instead of playing horn in the third movement. “Like a Lovely Suitor, I” Tonepoem for Orchestra and Wind Quintet

Duration: 17:00, a concerto for solo woodwind quintet and orchestra. The composer’s website (http://anthony-morris.de), states that the score and parts are available for rental. It’s not clear whether it actually has been performed, though.

The composer writes: “The title refers to the first line of the standard translation of the dramatic poem of Stanislav Neuvold 1802-1894… written in 1892 in his native Romania. ‘Like a lovely suitor, I, awake in the world of longing, hidden amongst unrevealed dreams and broken promises’, the story follows the transformation of the main character Selmond from a youthful energetic but somewhat shy dreamer into a wiser older character. The various episodes that Neuvold describes in the poem have been compared in form to a youthful version of a Don Quixote as Selmond always refers to his companion and fellow traveller Bartsch, a lowly born man servant who unknowingly to Selmond reports back continually in rhyming couplets to Selmond’s guardian Herold.”

In the last movement I imagine how people listen to my first wind quintet from 1951 as I make the voices go up and down mechanically, imitating one another in an obvious, slightly comical manner, finishing abruptly on an E-flat major chord which indicates that the piece is at its end.”

At about 50 minutes, it is Mozart’s biggest and longest work for winds. The 7 movements are: 1. Largo–Molto Allegro; 2. Menuetto; 3. Adagio; 4. Menuetto. Allegretto; 5. Romance. Adagio; 6. Tema con variazioni, and 7. Finale. Molto Allegro. The work was probably written in 1781 or 1782. The name “Gran Partita” (or Parthia, below) was later added to the work. Scores, including a replica of the original manuscript, are available for download on the International Music Score Library Project. The challenges of distilling 13 parts down to 5 is not trivial, even for the best of arrangers. [ Andrew Brandt ]

The Serenade in C Minor, K. 388 (later renumbered as K. 384a), was written for 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons and 2 horns, in or about 1782. The movements are: 1. Allegro; 2. Andante; 3. Menuetto (and Trio), and 4. Allegro. Mozart later arranged this music as a String Quintet, K. 406/516b. This latter version is the one that Mordechai Rechtmann (and possibly others) arranged for woodwind quintet. Personally, K. 388 is my favorite of all the Serenades for winds. The composer comments: “Jim Jones decided to hold a Kansas Arts Festival during American music week. The works had to be multimedia and appeal to kids. I considered doing something about pioneer women, but that sounded too serious. I had a collection of Kansas postcards, and many of the postcards have titles. I selected some with titles I could work with and arranged them in order. Traveling on Beautiful Interstate 70 – a wide-open nothing with some overpasses and trucks going down a straight highway. Kansas at Night – a black picture of the state: I was going to have the quintet sit in the dark while a recording of crickets played. I withdrew the movement because it killed the momentum of the piece – it didn’t work.”

Premiered at the Wichita State University Contemporary Music Festival; February 16, 2001. Recorded by the Lieurance Quintet with saxophonist Jean Lansing. The composer explains: “Second Wind, written in the summer of 2000, arose from a suggestion by Jim Jones, clarinet professor at Wichita State University, that I compose a piece for saxophone and woodwind quintet, specifically featuring the saxophone. Since this would be my second work for WSU’s Lieurance Quintet, I titled it Second Wind. In another sense the piece represents a “second wind” for me as a composer. Inspired by the outstanding playing of the Lieurance Quintet and saxophonist extraordinaire Jean Lansing, I approached the composition of this piece with an enthusiasm I hadn’t felt in a long time. The three movements are simple in form, tonal, colorful, and melodic; in fact, one of my goals was to explore the beautiful melodic qualities of the saxophone, especially as played by Ms. Lansing. After many years of pondering my identity as a composer in an academic environment, I reconnected with the love of melody that made me want to compose music in the first place.”

Composed with a Wichita State University Summer Research Grant for trumpeter Judith Saxton and the Lieurance Woodwind Quintet. Premiered on the Wichita State University American Music Week Concert; November 5, 2002. An excellent recording of the work is on the composer’s website, via SoundCloud.

The composer explains: “Between Friends was written for the unusual ensemble of trumpet and woodwind quintet. The four movements of the piece explore the relationship between the trumpet and the more established instrumental group, as well as some of the traditional roles the trumpet has fulfilled in music. In the first movement, the trumpet successively “awakens” the other instruments, alluding to its traditional role as the sounder of reveille in the military. The second movement refers to the trumpets playing of “Taps” at funerals. It is dedicated to former Lieurance Quintet member Nancy Lutes. The third movement established the trumpet as a sort of “bull in a china shop” with respect to the woodwind quintet. After repeated interruptions and attempts to dominate the group, the trumpet finally learns to cooperate. The fourth movement has a perpetual-motion character; here the trumpet participates as an equal member of the ensemble.”
