Blaserquintett, Op. 31 (1968)
A Romanian Jewish composer; the tiny bits of info online are split on whether the composer’s proper name is Leib Nachmann or Nachmann Leib. I’ve seen both versions of the name for this quintet. Also, in photos for an online auction, a book of 12 Preludes has the printed name “Leib Nachmann”, but the composer’s handwritten signature is “Nachmann Leib.” ¶ Adding to the confusion, in some eastern European languages (including, I believe, Romanian) it appears to be common to put the last name first without punctuation. Add traditions for Hebraic name orders and I am lost. If any readers can share insight on this issue, please contact me.

Ryohei Nakagawa is a Japanese bassoonist who performed in American orchestras for many years and who also made many friends in his performances for the International Double Reed Society conferences. He later returned to Japan to perform and teach. Several other quintet arrangements by Mr. Nakagawa are scattered around the list under the composers’ names, too.

Oscar Navarro is also a film composer and it shows as each movement sets a unique mood and scene. The work is based on the plot of Cervantes’ novel, Rinconete and Cortadillo, about two young men who set out to travel and join a band of thieves. Extensive program notes explaining the different scenes are available on the composer’s website, as is a link to the ZOAR Ensemble’s excellent video recording of the work. (Note that the English translation of the site erroneously calls this a Quartet, not a Quintet, but the Spanish is correct.) ¶ Each member of the ensemble has a chance to display their artistry. After just a couple of listenings I was completely charmed by the work. While listening, I imagined that this work could have been written by Prokofiev, Ligeti, Szervansky and de Falla if they all secretly met in a Dark Spanish Tavern and each set out to be more Spanish (and more puckish) than the others; but the Sevilla movement is pure Spanish beauty. The Grand Finale could be the highest energy Spanish music I’ve heard. ¶ When this work is published, I recommend that every professional quintet should get a copy and perform it. I predict this will become popular quintet literature and an audience favorite for the 21st century. [ Andrew Brandt ]

Vit Nejedlý was the third generation of Bohemian/Czech musicians. He and his father, Zdenek Nejedlý, fled the Nazis in World War II to the Soviet Union. After working in radio and composing for films, Vit enlisted in 1943 into the Red Army and eventually died, not of wounds but of typhoid at the Czechoslovak front.

After two listenings, I find the first movement to be a light, frivolous work that is pleasant enough, recycling a few of the less attractive elements of Beethoven’s 4th (thankfully not the (in)famous bassoon lick). The second makes me think of those darkly psychological Bartok “Night Music” movements (echoing Ligeti, perhaps) – the best of the three in my opinion. The third is described as a deconstructed jazz style, but I’m not buying it, and it seems tedious after a while. All the movements have enough rhythmic challenges in them to make them attractive to some performing quintets and perhaps all it needs is a peppier interpretation. I suggest you go to the composer’s website, listen a couple of times and see if you find the work interesting enough to perform (and prove me wrong). [ Andrew Brandt ]

Sincronie V (1982) for woodwind quintet
None of the usual references confirmed that this was actually for a standard woodwind quintet until I found one YouTube audio recording of a performance by the Concordia Woodwind Quintet, recorded in 1987, which shows this work uses various extended techniques, including multiphonics and microtones. Duration: 8:06.¶ Incidentally, for Niculescu, the V (or 5) in the title refers to the size of the ensemble, not that the work is the 5th in a series of Sincronies. Likewise, Synchrony III is for a trio, again not the 3rd work titled Synchrony. This appears to be consistent with his other titles, as well, although there appear to be some errant titles in YouTube videos, including a Synchrony II arranged for chamber orchestra. Nikolskaya was a Ukrainian-born composer during the Soviet period. Much info on her is only in Russian. There appears to be a difference of opinion over whether she died in 1984 or 1994. A few sources are also confused over whether she is a woman, but her full name confirms it. Good fodder for research by a Ukrainian musicologist here.

A character piece, translated as ‘Parade of the Brownies.’ (Apparently, the original cover artwork featured three marching, white-bearded dwarfs holding lances along a path lined with mushrooms.) Schott seems to have re-titled the work ‘Flibbertigibets.’ Schott also states that this is the only existing work by Noack, but Wikipedia lists at least four others. There are arrangements of this march for many different combinations of instruments from solo accordion to wind band, it was probably originally written for a dance orchestra.
After listening to YouTube recordings of this work in various incarnations, woodwind quintet players could be easily forgiven if they want to skip this dated but harmless piece unless they want to assemble a program of early 20th century German dance hall music. [ Andrew Brandt ]

Marlos Nobre works are serious, modern works (as opposed to arrangements of popular Brazilian tunes and styles). The first movement reflects 1970s Cold-War-era angst, but only with gentle dissonances and some flutter-tonguing. The pensive second movement pays some homage, perhaps, to the Brazilian Choro in its sad, singing beginning, but then transforms to something more sinister in the middle section. The third movement is brisk and mechanistic, with more pointed dissonances with a slow, sad soliloquy in the center that works back to the opening activity. In short, the work is an individual statement and not a proclamation of Brazilian nationalism or folk or popular music. Studying at the Curtis Institute of Music, Juilliard and the Moscow Conservatory, North became the first (and only?) American to be a member of the Union of Soviet Composers. Returning to the U.S., he composed many Hollywood movie scores. There are relatively few well-known late 18th century works for winds that show off the capabilities of the instruments that comprise the woodwind quintet, so it is surprising that this Sinfonietta isn’t better known or more frequently performed. Rudolf Novácek was a Czech composer, conductor, violinist and military band leader, so it’s no surprise that this work follows the Czech/Central European tradition of wind writing more than than the French style embodied in the Gounod Petite Symphonie composed just a few years earlier. ¶ There is no complete performance of the work available on YouTube (and possibly no commercial recording). An amateur ensemble offers a somewhat excruciating YouTube offering of the first three movements, while a more advanced student ensemble offers the finale. Even with only these interpretations, one can see that there are some grand musical moments in the work. ¶ Although the work arguably belongs more to the Harmoniemusik tradition than to the woodwind quintet school, one could program this work in a variety of ways. One would be to pair it with the Gounod work, or perhaps the Dvorak Serenade. Another would be to combine Novácek’s work with a later Romantic quintet (perhaps quintets by Paul Taffanel, Charles Lefebvre or August Klughardt) or a slightly extended quintet ensemble, such as Carl Reinecke’s Sextet, Ludwig Thuille’s Sextet for woodwind quintet and piano, or even Louise Farrenc’s earlier Sextet for woodwind quintet and piano. ¶ Novácek’s Sinfonietta is a unique work in several respects and deserves to be rescued from its obscurity and enjoyed by audiences.
