The Musicalics website clearly lists this work as a quintet as does the German-language Wikipedia article on Jana Obrovská and H. Alais Boenke’s Flute Music by Women Composers. The latter reference also lists a Sextet for Winds of 1955 by Obrovská. The Czech Musicbase website also has a list of Obrovká’s works, but unfortunately does not include any of her wind pieces.

Not knowing Finnish, I do know that woodwind quintet is usually written as “puhallinkvintetto.” “Puupuhallinkvintetto” looks like a typo, but it’s printed that way in the catalog and on the score. Would any Finns like to explain? [Andrew Brandt]

There were at least two John Okeovers in England and they may have been father and son. If so, the birthdates above (at least) would be suspect, however. The son appears to also have been known as John Oker, and he did write 17 fantasias (or fancies), according to Grove Music Online. This arrangement was performed by the Eastman Woodwind Quintet.

Although the bassoon and horn are not included in the catalog listing, it appears this work is for normal woodwind quintet with the doublings indicated. The work may be largely improvisational. (Although Ms. Oliveros’s website doesn’t list this title, it does list a work, Portraits, which includes a unique, computer generated score with improvisation for each player. The work was dedicated to Dorus [flutist Louis Dorus], the Verroust brothers [oboist Stanislas Verroust and bassoonist Charles Verroust], Leroy [possibly either Leon Leroy or Henri Leroy, clarinetist] and Menga [likely the hornist for the premiere]. Onslow was a student of Anton Reicha. An accomplished composer and musician who was wealthy enough not to require making his living as a musician, Onslow composed mostly chamber music works for strings, although he also wrote 4 symphonies and 4 operas. The IMSLP site allows you listen to a live performance of the work by Soni Ventorum, which illustrates Reicha’s influence (especially in its classical formal structure and the contrapuntal flow between instruments). To my ear, it sounds like a nice transitional work between Reicha and Taffanel, style-wise — right where it should be chronologically. Sounds like it would be fun to perform for the professional or advanced student quintet! ¶ There is contradicting evidence over whether Op. 81 was a single quintet or included 3 quintets. Most lists of Onslow’s works (including Grove’s, the Association George Onslow, Wikipedia (English), and the International Music Score Library Project) only list the Quintet in F Major in Op. 81. However, a few sources (see below) maintain that there were 3 quintets included in the opus and even list publishers. [ Andrew Brandt ]

The publisher NB Noter offers PDF sample scores and parts for immediate inspection on their website (something more publishers should do). Although I only quickly sampled three quintets, it appears that these works are simple, short, easy (and often slow) works, perhaps intended for student ensembles, appropriate for training in intonation, balance, dynamics and harmony. But it’s dangerous to make conclusions from such a small (and quickly viewed) sample, so I encourage you to check, yourself. [ Andrew Brandt ]

According to Donald Thompson’s article in Grove Music Online, Ortiz is a Puerto Rican composer raised in New York City. Many of his works reflect the street music of Hispanic and Black-American street culture. The title suggests that influence, although I cannot confirm that. [ Andrew Brandt ]

Finding information about this composer is even more difficult than finding information about the quintet. There is a pretty good chance that the name Kharp Ots was the Russian equivalent for the Estonian composer, Harri Otsa below and this work might even be the 1958 Suite listed under his name. Although the publisher Sovetskii kompozitor no longer exists, it seems this work was well distributed to academic libraries around the world. [ Andrew Brandt ]
