Cambini, Giuseppe Maria (1746-1818 or later)
Trois Quintetti Concertans (Three Concert Quintets) (ca. 1802)
Paris: Sieber, 1802
Score and parts for all three quintets are now also available for download from the International Music Score Library Project, at http://imslp.org/wiki/3_Wind_Quintets_(Cambini,_Giuseppe_Maria).
Originals are reportedly located in the U.S. Library of Congress.
This composer has also mistakenly been called Giovanni Giuseppe Cambini. He was active in Paris and his death is shrouded in obscurity and may have been as early as 1818, although some sources say 1825. He also wrote 82 Symphonies Concertantes, many of them featuring small groups of woodwinds. ¶ Although Cambini is not nearly as accomplished a composer as Mozart or Haydn, these three works are interesting because they appear to be the first quintets ever written for flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon and horn. (Note tha Franz Anton Rosetti’s Quintets were written 20 or so years earlier, but they were scored for flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon and English horn, not French horn.) Cambini’s quintets remain light, classical works which were later eclipsed by the quintets of Danzi and Reicha. [ Andrew Brandt ]

Quinteto de Vientos (1955)
The composer’s full name is Manuel Castillo Navarro-Aguilera. Duration: 13:00. Movements: Allegretto; Tema con Variaciones; Animato. Recently performed, March 8, 2021, by Aulos Madrid (Alvaro Octavio, flute; José Maria Ferrero, oboe; Enrique Pérez, clarinet; Javier Bonet, horn and Vicente Palomares, bassoon). Also recorded and available on YouTube by the Quinteto de Viento del Ateneo de Sevilla (Agustín Llavata, flute; Antonio García Herrera, clarinet; Carlos Baena, oboe; Manuel Salvador Tomás, horn; and Alfonso Sánchez, bassoon): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4tCJEQE3yUM
This quintet was apparently ignored for many years and later rescued from obscurity by at least two Spanish woodwind quintet ensembles. A quick listen to the YouTube recording shows it to be a delightful, wholly original tonal work with some virtuosic episodes for the players. (The recording has a few unfortunate interpolated noises and vibrations.) I’ve been unable to locate a publisher for the work, but if you can obtain the parts, it should be worth performing. Three Constructions, Op. 38 (1941)
Ft. Lauderdale, Florida: Spratt Music Publishers / Kalmus
Duration: 6:00. This piece is listed in a catalog as “Works for Study” rather than with the rest of his chamber music, suggesting it was written with student groups in mind. First performance was a broadcast on WNYC on Feb. 19, 1943.
Arthur Cohn in “The Literature of Chamber Music” describes this as “easy to perform and just as easy to listen to.”

Library Talk
Delaware Water Gap, PA: Shawnee Press
Duration: 7:00. Movements: Conversation; Catalog carnavaal; Fourth floor; Term paper.
According to the composer: “Library Talk was written during my graduate days at the University of California, Irvine. My composition professor, Dr Peter S Odegaard, had gotten some grant money and decided to hire a woodwind quintet. So his students were assigned the task of creating them music. To save time, I dug out various pieces and thematic ideas from my undergraduate days and tied them together as a tribute to all the hours I’d spent in the library doing research….” He describes the work as of moderate difficulty (mostly rhythmic) with some high horn parts.

According to H. Alais Boenke’s Flute Music by Women Composers, the work comes with abstract images on slides for 2 projectors. “This work creates an impression of suspended time, with metric freedom and elasticity recalling the ‘breath rhythm’ characteristic of Japanese gagku [gagaku?] and other Asian music….” Other than this entry, I have found no other information or source about this work online. It may have been written as a doctoral thesis at the University of North Texas. [ Andrew Brandt ]

Cherney, Brian (1942- )
Woodwind Quintet (1965)
London, Ontario, Canada: Jaymar Music / Represented in the U.S.A. by Oxford University Press, 1990
Toronto: Canadian Music Centre
Movements: I. Andante; II. Adagio; III. Allegro scherzando. Duration: 9:15. CMC citation notes an error in printing: First page of horn part is printed on bassoon part. First page of bassoon part is printed on horn part. (Don’t know if subsequent editions corrected this.) Recorded by the York Winds.
Mr. Cherney is a unique composer in that he often illustrates his scores and parts with antique illustrations that may or may not help the performers interpret the score (and may suggest multi-lingual puns). Sonically, he does much the same by adding quotations of nineteenth century works, or other more modern works and songs. In one (non-quintet work), Cherney illustrates the score so heavily with illustrations of Brahms’s love life and Jewish life in Austria in Brahms’s lifetime, that he allows the performers to just enjoy the score and forego performing the work if they wish. (See Brian Cherney: Collaborator and Composer by John Beckwith, Brian Cherney: Collaborator and Composer by John Beckwith. [ Andrew Brandt ]
Group Portrait–with Piano (1978)
Toronto: Canadian Music Center
Flute doubles on piccolo. Duration: 13:00. ¶ Commissioned by the York Winds through the Canada Council. Counterintuitively, this work is scored for normal woodwind quintet but requires the piano (without pianist) to be onstage with the quintet.
A problem of listing this work is that some sources say this work includes piano and other catalogs say that it doesn’t. In a way, it is both. In an article by John Bechwith, “Brian Cherney: Collaborator and Composer,” Beckwith explains the performance requirements for Group Portrait–with Piano: “The five wind players wear specific costumes and enact an elaborate comic scenario. In the end, a costumed figure emerges from the audience with a camera and poses the players for a flash portrait. There is no pianist: the piano is there simply as part of the stage setting, and the horn plays a few phrases into its sound-board. In his introduction, the composer refers to the score as a ‘cheap piece of theatrical and musical entertainment,’ and adds, ‘There is irony but no depth, symbolism but no meaning, form but no content.’” [ Andrew Brandt ]

Chopin, Kate (1850-1904)
Lilia’s Polka (ca. 1899)(arr. Barbara Harbach)
St. Louis: Vivace Press
Primarily famous as a writer, Kate Chopin wrote short stories and novels, including writing about life in Louisiana where she lived during her 18-year marriage. A half century after her death, she became known as a predecessor to modern feminist writing and is now considered an essential American author. (While living in Louisiana myself, I toured her Cloutierville plantation home which was later destroyed by fire.) Also a pianist (and, with a name like Chopin, why not?), she reportedly had an excellent ear and dabbled in composition, including this work for piano, named after her daughter, Lelia. This work’s arranger, Barbara Harbach, is herself a keyboard artist, professor of music, and promoter of women in music. [ Andrew Brandt ]
Chou Wen-chung (1923- )
Suite for Harp and Wind Quintet (1951)
New York, C. F. Peters Corp., 1951 (P6205)
Richmond, Virginia: International Opus
Duration: 6:40. First performed by the
Metropolitan Wind Quintet with Marietta Bitter, harpist, in New York City, Feb. 22, 1952. See the composer’s website for details and a recording: https://chouwenchung.org/composition/suite-for-harp-and-wind-quintet/ .
Excerpt from a New York Herald review: “The most striking new presentation was the Suite for Harp and Wind Quintet by Chou Wen-Chung…. Harmonically, the suite is as Western as its delicate modalism will allow. Texturally, it is more exotic, the five traditional Chinese melodies…. acquire a wealth of harmonic and instrumental color without losing their essential monodic character. That the suite is a thorough expressive success…is immediately apparent.” Further, Grove Music Online says that the Suite “based on five Chinese melodic patterns, synthesizes his philosophy on the merging of East and West….”

Five Poems (1977)
Manuscript.
American-born, Coates moved to Munich in 1969 and has been a part of the region’s cultural and academic life since. Thus, this work was performed by the Bläserquintett des SWF. The Five Poems are likely those by Emily Dickenson, whose poetry she frequently uses for inspiration. This title is NOT included in the extensive list of Coates’s works ( http://www.pytheasmusic.org/coates_gloria.html ), however, and it could conceivably refer to her “Five Abstractions of the Poems of Emily Dickinson” of 1975 for woodwind quartet (flute/piccolo, oboe/English horn, clarinet/bass clarinet; and bassoon. Or, it might be exclusively written for the SWF Quintet.

STYX V+1 (2022) for wind quintet and vibraphone
Tel Aviv: Israeli Music Center (for rent)
A recording with score is available on Youtube: https://youtu.be/F79VnMem2X0
This work, in addition to the novelty of using vibraphone, uses many aleatoric techniques including multiphonics, glissandos, key pops, improvised patterns, and occasional bowed notes on the vibraphone. Experience rehearsing and performing with a non-metric score (without barlines) would be a big advantage in learning this work. The recording on Youtube is very well done! STYX V+1 (I assume the V is Roman numeral 5) is certainly not everybody’s cup of tea, but after a couple of listenings, it seems enigmatically attractive. Worth a listen and possibly a performance for the right quintet and the right audience. [ Andrew Brandt ]

With a plethora of Steven Cohens, I was finally able to narrow down these works to the only, living Steve Cohen I could contact on the web. Nevertheless, this NYC-based composer should not be confused with Steve Cohn who is clearly a separate, Los Angeles based composer (see below). There is also an additional Steven Cohen who is a guitarist and unrelated to our Steve Cohen. There may be a separate composing Steven Cohen, but I no longer can find online references to him. UMOJA, The First Day of Kwanzaa (2001)
Richmond, Va.: International Opus, 2003
Umoja is Swahili for “unity.” Valerie Coleman is flutist with the Imani Winds. Duration: 2:35. The Imana Winds perform by memory in this video. Chamber Music America listed this work as one of its “Top 101 Great American Ensemble Works.”
In my opinion, if your professional woodwind quintet wants to be considered a relevant 21st century ensemble, especially if you are American, you need to perform one or more of Valerie Coleman’s quintets. Her original voice, which mixes Southern blues, a proud African-American heritage, New York urban sounds, jazz, and even Caribbean rhythms, is unique and compelling. (Also check out the Imani Winds’ hornist Jeff Scott’s works.) [ Andrew Brandt ]
Afro-Cuban Concerto, for woodwind quintet (2001)
Richmond, Va.: International Opus, 2006
3 movements: Afro (based on the Afro-Cuban clave rhythm), Vocalise (prayer evolving into a hot Havana day) and Danza (quick rhumba with variations). Duration: 15:00.
The Los Angeles Times referred to this work as an “engaging showpiece, deftly woven polyrhythmic lines — suggesting the pulse of Cuban clave and even James Brown.”
Red Clay and Mississippi Delta (2009)
Subtitled, “Scherzo for wind quintet”. Duration: 5:25. See the Imani Winds’ video of a live performance with the composer on flute.
According to the composer: “Red Clay and Mississippi Delta is a light scherzo work that references my family’s background of living in Mississippi. From the juke joints and casino boats that line the Mississippi river, to the skin tone of my relatives from the area: a dark skin that looks like it came directly from the red clay. The solo lines are instilled with personality, meant to capture the listener’s attention as they wail with ‘bluesy’ riffs that are accompanied (‘comped’) by the rest of the ensemble. The result is a virtuosic chamber work that merges classical technique and orchestration with the blues dialect and charm of the south.”
“speech, and canzone” (2002) for woodwind quintet and mp4

Concerto for Wind Quintet
Although titled a concerto, it’s for woodwind quintet alone, but features each of the instruments virtuosically. Duration: 15:35. Recorded by the Imani Winds, listen on YouTube: Afro: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CkqD2YLpjtY . Danza https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V4gMX9lja68 . Vocalise https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TffcNbq_FgI . Contact the composer on her site or the Imani Winds website, to see if the parts are available for sale.
Listening to the online versions on YouTube (and not on the Imani Winds album, the classical underground, it’s unclear of the exact order of the movements. But Afro and Danza definitely should be the high energy outer movements and the Vocalise the inner, more contemplative movement. And when I say “high energy”, I’m talkin’ launching a rocket into deep space explosive energy. Listen and decide for yourself. Recommended for the hip, professional quintet. [ Andrew Brandt ]

Juarez, Mexico: Centro Nacional de Investigacion, Documentacion e Informacion Musical Carlos Chavez
There seems to be some difference of opinion on whether Contreras was born in 1910, but the current consensus appears to be 1910.
Allan Kozinn, in his Jan. 13, 1991 review in The New York Times, wrote, “Salvador Contreras’s ‘Dos Piezas Dodecafonicas’ (1966), a wind quintet, was a pleasant reminder that 12-tone writing can be lyrical – in this case, Copland-like – when composers wish.”

Suite for Woodwind Quintet (ca. 1933)
Mercury Music Press
New York: Theodore Presser
Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania: Merrymount Music Press, 1949 (Merion Music Co., sole representative)
There seems to be some question about when Cowell composed this work, with dates such as 1930, 1933, 1934 floating around. It wasn’t until 1949 when the work was copyrighted. Duration: 5:00. Movements: Allegretto; Allegro; Adagio cantabile; and Allegro con moto A recording by Musicians Accor is available on YouTube, combined with Antarctic imagery that, strangely, seems to work. https://youtu.be/bBZE8CbRgNE?feature=shared . The Cowell Quintet has also recorded the work, but only one movement seems to be available on YouTube. Also see http://www.henrycowell.org .
Davyd Breeskin says this suite is adapted from four of the six movements Cowell earlier wrote for clarinet and piano, also scored for clarinet and small orchestra. Recorded by Musicians Accor
For all of Cowell’s reputed iconoclasm and international fame for compositional adventurism, the Suite is somewhat adventurous in harmony and melody, but it comes across gently in short musical vignettes. Nothing to object to these days, but worth considering adding to your quintet literature. [ Andrew Brandt ]

Peter & the Wolf (with narrator) (1998)
Ft. Collins: MSS Pub.
Duration: 12:00.
Wind players who are used to performing this work in its
orchestra version will likely find this arrangement disappointing. Many of the solo sections are truncated, string parts are not necessarily filled in by other members of the quintet, and much of the narration is unaccompanied in places where the orchestra version has music underneath. However, after listening to a recording, this arrangement appears to be a simple and easy arrangement of this classic for young audiences and the less experienced quintet.
