Alford, Kenneth J. (pseudonym for Maj. Fredric Joseph Ricketts)(1881-1945)

Colonel Bogey March (1914) (arr. Frank J. Halferty)

Delevan, NY: Kendor Music, 2000

A British military bandmaster, Ricketts used the alias Alford (his mother’s name) for his music published outside the military. The title and the tune were inspired by a fellow military man and golfer who whistled a characteristic two-note phrase (a descending minor third interval) instead of shouting “Fore!” It is this descending interval which begins each line of the melody. Bogey is a golfing term meaning one over par. Wikipedia has an entertaining article on this march with description of various lyrics.

Aliabiev, Alexander Nikolaivich (also spelled Alyabyev, Aliabev, Aljabjew)(1787-1851)

Quintet in C Minor

Moscow: Muzycka /

Koln: P. J. Tonger, 2000, also try Interlibrary loan: Harvard

This quintet begins with an introduction in C Minor, then when the allegro section begins, it quickly switches to C Major, but at the end there’s a slower section back in C minor, so there appears to be some debate whether the listed key should be C minor or C major. Aliabiev never actually finished the work and it was completed later by B. Dobrochotow. Duration: 7:20. There is a nice recording by the Bolshoi Theater Woodwind Quintet on https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PQEngWLidqw . (Aliabiev should not be confused with his contemporary, Alabiev, Alexander Micholaevich, 1802-1852.)

Alyabyev’s quintet begins with a simple C minor chord followed by a somber, Russian-style introduction ending with a V7 chord which, in the blink of an eye, resolves to a merry allegro section in C Major with no transition whatsoever. Although the work begins and ends in C Minor, the allegro is steadfastly in C Major, so musicologists can have a merry argument about whether the work should be billed as in C Minor or C Major. As far as the allegro, development consists largely of canonic repetition of a twelve-note motive, with a B theme introduced briefly. There are several virtuosic scale passages which allows every player to show off a bit. One or twice you think we have the beginnings of a fugal development that, well, never really develops. Almost as suddenly as it began, we return to the introductory musical material for a quick, still-somber, ending. Perhaps the somewhat abrupt ending is because the composer reportedly never finished the work and it was completed by B. Dobrochotow. [ Andrew Brandt ]

Twenty-Two Woodwind Quintets

Cincinnati, Ohio: Albert J. Andraud (probably 1949)

San Antonio: Southern Music Co.

San Antonio: Southern Music Co., new version, edited by Charles Neidich, which includes a 186-page score.

This collection was known as the famous “Yellow Books” (formerly the “Orange Books”). In the new edition, the covers are red. In addition to a score for the new edition, Southern Music states that many corrections were made in the parts and some of the arrangements have been revised. More accurately, the collection is actually 19 quintets plus a trio d’anche (the Pfeiffer trio for oboe, clarinet and bassoon), a wind quartet by Karl Goepfart, and a wind sextet by Heinrich Scherer.

There is little actual biographical info about Andraud available online, and some of it may be apochryphal. Here’s what I’ve gleaned: Albert Jean Andraud (born February 17, 1884 in Bordeaux and died April 15, 1975 in Cincinnati, Ohio) trained in France as an oboist, receiving the Premier Prix in oboe in 1900 at the Paris Conservatoire. He toured the United States with the French army band in 1913. After serving in World War I, he reportedly toured again with the Republican Guarde Band to Chautauqua, New York, and never returned to France. He performed as Principal Oboist with the Chicago Opera, as oboist and English hornist with the Cleveland Orchestra and as Principal Oboist with the Cincinnati Symphony (from 1929 to 1955). At the end of his last performance with the Cincinnati Symphony he felt he was entitled to a solo bow to acknowledge his long tenure with the orchestra. But when (according to the Cincinnati Enquirer) the conductor “stood in icy immobility”, Andraud took it upon himself to stand for a final solo bow. (Perhaps the lesson should be to never ignore your principal oboist!) [Thanks to HeBu Musikverlag GmbH and Composers-classical-music.com for the biographical info.] Andraud also was active as a composer, arranger and publisher of chamber music and orchestra studies for flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon and horn. He created his own music press in Cincinnati and, with his still active connections in France, became the American publisher for many French works for winds. He also taught at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music and later in North Texas State University in Denton (now the University of North Texas). Andraud’s original woodwind quintet collection was of 16 quintets, published in Cincinnati by his own press in 1940. This was later expanded to the 22 quintet series, probably in 1949. At some time (probably in 1958), he sold his publishing company to Southern Music in San Antonio, which still publishes much of his work. [ Andrew Brandt ]

Beethoven – Op. 25 Minuet, Andante and Variations

Beethoven – Op. 18, No. 5 variations

Elsa Barraine – Ouvrage de Dame, Theme & Variations

Adrien Barthe – Passacaille

B. M. Colomer – Minuet & Bourree

Hedwige Chretien (1859-1944) – Quintet

Adolphe Deslandres (1840-1911) – Trois Pieces en Quintette

Karl Goepfart – Quartet, Op. 93 (flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon)

F. J. Haydn – Quintet (arr. Fritz Muth)

F. J. Haydn – Presto

Charles Lefebvre (1843-1917) – Suite, Op. 57

Moritz, Edvard (1891-1974) – Quintet, Op. 41

Mozart – Minuet

Mozart – German Dance

Albert Normand – Quintette, Op. 45

Georges Pfeiffer (1835-1908) – Musette for oboe, clarinet, and bassoon

Gabriel Pierne (1863-1937) – Pastorale, Op. 14, No. 1

Claude Paul Taffanel (1844-1908) – Quintet

Heinrich Scherrer (1865-1937) – Old French Dances, Op. 11 (sextet for woodwind quintet and 2nd clarinet)

This volume is probably the most popular collection of woodwind quintets, although some of the works are definitely showing their age. Notably, the collection includes two works by women composers, Elsa Barraine and Hedwige Chretien. The arrangement of the Beethoven Sextet gives all the original bassoon solos to the horn, which to my mind is like taking the Mozart oboe quartet and giving the oboe solo to a trumpet. So I prefer the “Philadelphia Woodwind Quintet” arrangement, see BEETHOVEN. The Taffanel Quintet is probably the best work in the collection (but see the link above for other sources). The Barthe and Lefebvre pieces are relatively easy, attractive original quintet works; they and other works are also available individually. Follow the links above or look them up by composer in this list. [ Andrew Brandt ]

Three Shanties, Op. 4 (1943)

New York: Carl Fischer (c) 1952 /

London: Paterson’s Publications, Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk: Exclusive distributors, Music Sales Ltd., [2004?], 1952.

You probably knew that the first movement was based on “What can you do with a drunken sailor?” but did you know that the second movement is based on “Boney was a warrior” (“Boney” being Bonaparte, as in Napoleon), and the third is based on “What will the Navy do when good old Lulu’s gone?” (Although another source lists is as “When Johnny comes down from Hilo.”) I’ve never heard of a quintet who didn’t play this piece (too many times). If your only experience of Arnold is this work, it may be surprising to learn that Arnold also wrote 9 symphonies, 20+ concertos, and scores for almost 120 films. [ Andrew Brandt ]

Wind Quintet, Op. 2 (1942)

Queen’s Temple Publications

Movements: Allegro; Presto; Alla Marcia. Originally written for principal players of the London Philharmonic, the score and parts were long lost. Recently, the parts were found and the work was published in 2003. For the convoluted story of the first BBC broadcast, and how it was lost and found, see Paul Harris’s website: http://www.paulharristeaching.co.uk/blog/2016/7/7/lost-and-found-the-remarkable-story-of-malcolm-arnolds-wind-quintet . A recording of the East Winds is available on YouTube: https://youtu.be/sISR08alhoA .

After listening to the East Winds recording, this is an interesting early Arnold work for winds, much like his Three Shanties, but longer, less succinct and, in the last movement, a bit angrier. The first two movements are bright and cheery — nothing to dislike here. The third movement includes a satirical, somewhat dissonant, march-like theme. Some ascribe it to Arnold’s anti-war sentiment. Indeed, in 1942, Britain was fighting for its existence against Nazi Germany, so your opinion on whether an anti-war stance was principled or traitorous might vary. In any case, the finale seems the least focused and attractive to these ears. In the 1940s, this quintet might have been considered a significant addition to woodwind quintet literature. 80 years later, the reaction is more muted, with so much more wonderful quintet music to choose from. In my opinion, whether you like or dislike this piece will really depend on whether you would enjoy the Three Shanties without the folksy musical appropriations. [ Andrew Brandt ]

Tentett (1997) for double woodwind quintet

Arrieu, Claude (professional name for Anne Louise Marie Simon) (1903-1990)

Quintet en Ut (Quintet in C)

Paris: Gerard Billaudot, 1953

Paris: Pierre Noel

The Bellavente Wind Quintet has a video of this piece on Youtube. Movements: I. Allegro; II. Andante; III. Allegro scherzando; IV. Adagio; V. Allegro vivace. Duration: 11:15. See also: http://www.musicologie.org/Biographies/a/arrieu_claude.html (en Français).

Although written in 1955, a time of upheaval in musical composition, Arrieu’s Quintet harkens back to the Parisian wind music of the 1920s and 1930s. The work sounds a bit like Ibert or Milhaud, but taking the time to fill out traditional Classical forms. The oboe, flute and clarinet particularly shine in the piece, which is well crafted for each instrument without pushing the technical boundaries very far. In other words, if you are looking for a 1950s adventurous, avant-garde woodwind quintet, this is definitely not it. But if you want to perform something showing off the light, optimistic French salon style of the early twentieth century (and you just can’t face another performance of Ibert or Milhaud), this is a good choice. [ Andrew Brandt ]

Wind Dixtuor (1967)

Paris: Gerard Billaudot

There is some conflicting information about the instrumentation for this piece. The correct instrumentation appears to be: 2 flutes, oboe, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, horn, trumpet and trombone. (The 2nd flute may double on piccolo.) A pair of YouTube recordings by the student Neoteric Winds uses different instrumentations (substituting saxophone for trumpet in one).Duration: 13:00.Movements: 1. Allegro moderato; 2. Moderato – Allegro scherzando – Andante – Tempo primo; 3. Andante – Allegro scherzando. The Atlanta Chamber Players has recordings of several of the movements scattered around, but doesn’t identify the movements. (Sigh!) Wikipedia (English) currently has a short description of this work under the composer’s entry.

Concerto (1962) for woodwind quintet and strings

Paris: Costallat

Milano: Ricordi

There appears to be a version for quintet and piano (by Ricordi), probably for rehearsal purposes. But this leads some publishers to list this as a work for quintet and piano instead of quintet and strings. Another catalog lists a sextet, but that is likely another confused entry for this work.

For those not familiar with it, The Sacred Harp was originally a hymn tunebook published in New England in 1844 for a capella choirs using shape notes instead of usual musical notation. The style and notation was later popular in Southern American churches. (Wikipedia has a pretty good article about it.)

Avshalomov, David (1946- )

Around the Year (2002)

Duration: 11:00.

According to the composer, “The four miniatures of Around the Year create moods that briefly evoke the four seasons of the year. They can be performed singly or in sets, and (unlike the real seasons) in normal or reverse order: Winter Mood (Snow on the mountains). Autumn Walk (Brisk leaf-blown day in a park). Summer Dream (Hot Southern night). Spring Games (Children on a grassy hillside). The images listed after the movement titles came to me well after I had started or completed each piece.”

Aylward, John

Daedalus (2014)

Contact the composer at https://johnaylward.com/ .

This one-movement work uses alto flute throughout although, apparently, it can be performed with one or more flutes and one and more clarinets. The rest of the quintet is as expected. Duration: 8:30. Written for the City of Tomorrow quintet, which has also recorded the work. (The composer later created a version for bass flute, clarinet/bass clarinet, violin and cello, so be sure to order the correct version.) A video is available on the ensemble’s website and on YouTube (which is always subject to change) at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ea6IrwflnvA .

To perform this work, the flutist must be comfortable with making lots of huffing and puffing sounds (there probably is a technical term for that, but I don’t remember it) as well as fluttertonguing. The other instruments have occasional stop-tongue effects and glides. It appears to have constantly changing meters and everybody needs a lot of rhythmic security. (In the video, the clarinetist appears to be the designated conductor.) The composer could be channeling the ghosts of Boulez and Stockhausen. One could find parallels in the mythology of Daedalus and Icarus, the pair taking off, souring in the high air, and then Daedalus landing after Icarus crashed (a 3-part structure). But one should also remember that Daedalus created the original labyrinth, which the piece might also imitate. Any quintet thinking about programming this work should definitely watch the video. Aesthetically, this seems as far from Ibert’s Trois Pièces Brèves as you can get. (My sense of irony might lead me to put both on the same program.) If your ensemble is interested in a challenge and extending your (and your audience’s) idea of woodwind quintet music, you should give this piece a look. [ Andrew Brandt ]
