Originally scored for strings, the composer arranged his work for 2 flutes (2^nd doubling on piccolo), 2 oboes (2^nd doubling English horn), 2 clarinets (2^nd doubling bass clarinet), 2 bassoons (2^nd doubling contrabassoon), 2 horns. The work is based on a 16^th century French song, “A l’ombre d’un buissonet’ from La Couronne et Fleur (1556). Movements: Prelude: Lento; Variation I Allegretto; Variation II Allegro Vivo; Variation III Andante (Homage to Peter Warlock); Variation IV Con brio e ritmico; Finale. Duration: 18:00.

Bennett, Robert Russell (1894-1981)

Dance Scherzo (or Dance Scherzoso) (1937)

Written for and broadcast on Bennett’s radio series, “Russell Bennett’s Notebook,” on the Mutual Broadcasting Network, the reviewer Charles Mills (who often criticized the program) called Dance Scherzo “a fairly amusing and clever work.” ¶ For those of us who played RRB’s musicals (too many times), it might be a surprise that he spent 3 years in Paris studying with Nadia Boulanger (through a Guggenheim fellowship), wrote 7 symphonies, an opera, and over 30 wind-band works. But locating the manuscripts for these two quintets probably will take a specialist in RRB’s music and archives. [ Andrew Brandt ]

Toy Symphony for woodwind quintet (ca. 1928)

Composed in Paris while Bennett was studying with Nadia Boulanger, the Toy Symphony was written for the principal winds of the Philadelphia Orchestra and premiered in 1932 in Philadelphia. Possibly never published, though. [ Andrew Brandt ]

Concerto Grosso for Wind Quintet and Wind Orchestra (1958)

The work was one of the earliest commissions by Robert Boudreau for his American Wind Symphony (who also commissioned a work by Heitor Villa-Lobos at around the same time). It premiered on July 6, 1958, in Pittsburgh, conducted by the composer. Donald Steinfurst, reviewer for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, described it: “the first two movements are serious in character, stolid but nicely apportioned to the wind soloists. The latter two movements, a Scherzo and a rapid Finale, are more syncopated even jazzy in character, and are thoroughly enjoyable in this medium.” [From a dissertation The Life and Work of Robert Russell Bennett by Roy Benton Hawkins, 1989.] Bennett would go on to write many other works for the American Wind Symphony.

Siegfried Benzon is a mysterious composer, violinist, singer and conductor. According to composers-classical-music.com, he had several positions in the German states from 1817 until 1822, when he was dismissed from the Staatsorchester Kassel (and replaced by Ludwig Spohr). Perhaps unable to obtain a new position, he sailed from Bremen in 1823 to either South Africa or Australia and the biographical trail disappears. (Since Australia was a British penal colony at the time, that seems like an unlikely destination for any German, especially a musician. South Africa, particularly Cape Town (also a British territory in 1823), would make more sense, but since we don’t know why Benzon left, this is all speculative.) ¶ If Benzon’s quintet was published in 1819, he must have written his quintet during the same period that Reicha was writing his 24 quintets in Paris, although it’s entirely plausible that neither composer knew of the other’s work. Nevertheless, this work should be listed as one of the earliest woodwind quintets. ¶ Benzon dedicated his quintet to V. Blashek, who’s anonymity only extends the mystery around the quintet. Premiered by the Barrère Ensemble (likely in New York City, probably at Juilliard). ¶ Born in St. Petersburg in Imperial Russia, Berezowsky graduated from the Imperial Capella with honors at 16. He later served as musical director of the School of Modern Art in Moscow and first violinist of the Moscow Grand Opera. In 1922 he made a dangerous escape in disguise from the Soviet Union, only to be arrested in Poland, but released by an official who remembered hearing him play. He travelled to New York, continued violin studies at the Juilliard School of Music, and performed with the New York Philharmonic for his first seven years in the U.S. He would have been a student a Juilliard when he composed tis work. The conductor Serge Koussevitzky would become a staunch supporter of Berezowsky. ¶ An older recording of this work The New Art Wind Quintet is available on YouTube.

The Suite No. 1 is a quirky work, light-hearted on the surface, but with frequent dissonant harmonies (and polytonal bits) that suggest darker underlying currents. To these ears, the work sounds closer to members of Les Six with a dark Russian soul than to the Germans (Schoenberg and Hindemith) of the decade. But then the third movement adds some Hindemithian overtones. The slow second and fourth movements have a lonely dark-night-of-the-soul quality that adds depth to the work. The first and third and fifth movements have more energy and forward motion, but don’t reach an emotional resolution until the finale. When heard in context with more famous works of the 1920s, Berezowsky’s quintet, at first hearing seems more frivolous and clown-like (especially in the first movement), but after a few hearings, there’s a unique style under the surface that hints of a more serious, darker, perhaps Russian attitude to the work. In context of the aesthetics of the decade, this quintet holds its own against Hindemith, Schoenberg and the others. It deserves to be heard more often and also deserves a better recording. Quintett No. 1 (1930 [???]

References to this work are problematic. After Berezovsky’s defection to the United States, it seems extremely unlikely that the official Soviet publisher, Muzyka, would publish a work composed in 1930 by Berezovsky, who was by then American citizen. It’s more likely that someone confused the German Russischer Musikverlag with the Russian Muzyka, and mis-dated the publishing year. The Musicalics online database also refers to a Quintet 2 of 1937, which is likely a mixed-up reference to the Suite No. 2 of 1941, below.

Opus Number Zoo requires the players to alternate playing and narrating text to tell modern fables (by Rhoda Levine) about different animals. The score includes text in English, Italian and German. (The parts might have only English, so check.) ¶ The main difficulty in peforming this work is for the ensemble to play softly enough during the narrations so the text can easily be heard. For the speakers, enunciation, volume and interpretation are important. The ensemble might consider positioning themselves in a straight line (perhaps standing) instead of the normal seating plan so each speaker can face the audience directly. ¶ The original version of Opus No. Zoo in 1950 was for 2 clarinets, 2 horns, and a separate speaker, Cathy Berberian (who later collaborated with Berio on many vocal works). So using a separate narrator (who could read the score as an ensemble member) could be a performance option. ¶ Unlike many works designed for children, Opus No. Zoo works very well in formal recital settings, too. According to the composer, “In Eagle, the open intervals and melodic embellishments lend a Native American feel to the introduction. This carries the listener to the magnificent open plains where the music gradually swells into a soaring theme before returning to rest at the end. — Chickadee is the most literal translation of birdsong in the suite, with “chick-a-dee-dee-dees” and “phoe-bes” used as motivic material. In addition, the movement attempts to capture the perky, inquisitive nature of the little bird. — Owl is a shift into a dark forest, with creepy night noises and the bassoon taking the lead with a spooky octatonic melody. — Swan characterizes the beauty of the majestic bird as it sweeps through the water. — Hummingbird is a rondo that uses the quintet to emulate a tiny bird that zooms in and out of sight as it hovers and zips around with its lightning-quick wings.

The composer writes that this work “… belongs to a group of pieces (including my opera Baa Baa Black Sheep and the solo viola piece Odd Man Out) that are all connected to or inspired by children and in particular their behaviour and their games. What fascinates me is not just the fun or the invention but the elements of kindness and cruelty that often emerge side by side; the combinations of vulnerability and strength, or resignation and ruthlessness. ¶ The music follows a Sonatina-like structure with a fast-slow-fast pattern. Most of the work is based on the notes that make up the short phrase of wide intervals first heard on the bassoon. ¶ This opening vivo soon develops into multi-textured ideas and considerable friction. By contrast the slow, uncluttered centre of the work is, I think, perhaps coloured by recollections of playing Bartok’s piano music for children… The last movement is a chase but once again there are some rather nasty and unexpected twists and turns.”

Carlo Besozzi was one of the most famous oboists of his time and best known of four generations of Besozzi family oboists and bassoonists. Much like Alexander Borodin, Beythien was also a chemist and part-time composer. This work was originally created in 1925 for woodwind sextet (with two clarinets), but later reworked for woodwind quintet in 1927 (having the oboist double on English horn). It was performed widely in the 1930s, but then seems to have faded away (possibly being out of print or simply because of the disruptions of World War II). Performing ensembles appear to have included the Wind Quintet of the Dresden State Opera and a quintet of the Staatsoper Berlin, among others. Written around the same time as the Hindemith and Nielsen quintets and before the Ibert quintet, the new Ostermeyer edition may help us to understand the compositional variety of the 1920s quintets better. This work was commissioned by French flutist Paul Taffanel and his Parisian wind ensemble, La Société de Musique de Chambre pour Instruments à vent. There appear to be some conflicting opus numbers, with Opus 29 referring to both the Suite in D Major for ten winds and also his “Four Novelletten for Piano.” (See the list of works on the International Music Score Library Project site: http://imslp.org/wiki/List_of_works_by_Arthur_H._Bird).

Both of these Arthur Bird works are recorded by the North Texas Chamber Players on Klavier Wind Recordings, KCD-11071. On first listening, both works sounded, to my ears, like a cross between the Gounod Petite Symphonie and the Dvořak Serenade, with a hint more of seriousness and contrapuntal ability. They’re both delightful works in the French Nineteenth Century style and deserve to be rescued from obscurity. After 1900 Bird rarely composed, so these two dectets are the best examples of Bird’s mature Romanticism. [ Andrew Brandt ]

According to the article in Grove Music Online, this was Birtwistle’s first mature composition, completed on the last day of 1957. He composed quickly, saying, “I wrote it completely off the top of my head. I can’t justify a single note.” When the work was selected for performance at the 1959 Cheltenham Festival, Birtwistle reportedly decided to sell his clarinets and aim towards being a composer, instead. According to the composer, “This is one of several works commissioned from me over the years by the Northern Sinfonia. It was written in 1971 and somewhat revised in 1978. It is a substantial piece lasting some twenty minutes and has at its heart a Scherzo which contains three contrasting musics with interrelated tempi. The short, central Trio is a cor anglais solo. An Andante, also full of contrasts, precedes the scherzo, and these two densely through-composed movements are preceded and followed by lighter, more episodic forms. Although a 20^th century work, this quintet is more in the style of the late 19^th century: sort of a cross between Brahms and Richard Strauss in style. It is a beautiful work and deserves to be performed much more often. Highly recommended for the advanced quintet.
