OPUS 56

3 Quintets, Op. 56 (1819-1820)

Paris: Chez Maurice Schlesinger, 1821 (microfilm negative from the score in Bibliotheque du Conservatoire Royal, Brussels 1979)

These three quintets were published as a set in 1821 by Maurice Schlesinger. The clarinetist was required to have clarinets in ;b and A, and they were also scored for natural horn for which keys were changed by using crooks instead of valves. This volume was dedicated to Antoine Reicha, who had recently finished writing his 24 woodwind quintets.

Divertimento nach alten Volksliedern, “Kume, kum, geselle min” Op. 24 (1939) for woodwind quintet and orchestra

Breitkopf & Härtel

According to Grove Music Online, a great deal of David’s earlier works, including over 100 chamber pieces and songs, were destroyed by the composer himself. The 1943 bombing of Leipzig destroyed much of his remaining music up until that time, with this piece being one of the exceptions. Johann is father to Thomas Christian David, below.

Konzert für fünf Bläser und Streichorchester (1962), for flute, oboe, clarinet, horn, bassoon and string orchestra

Wein: Musikverlag Doblinger

Some other listings might confuse these last two works (as I used to, also), or might consider this latter work to be a brass quintet concerto. (I have not confirmed the existence of a concerto for brass quintet and orchestra by David; this piece is not it. But some Austrian music databases have a nasty habit of including brass instruments under the generic term “Bläser,“ which does create confusion.) [ Andrew Brandt ]

The Bremen Town Musicians (1985)

New York: Carl Fischer, 1999

Based on “The Bremen Town Musicians” (the fairy tale), by the Brothers Grimm, adapted by the composer. Includes speaking parts for instrumentalists. Duration: 19:00. See also: http://www.jondeak.com/works.htm

Joseph McLellan of the Washington Post reviewed the work’s premiere: “‘The Musicians of Bremen,’ which had its Washington premiere Friday night at the National Academy of Sciences, may be the woodwind quintet’s answer to ‘Peter and the Wolf.’ The latest work of Jon Deak, a New York composer who has also been performed here by the 20th Century Consort, compensates in vividness what it may lack in profundity. The performers Friday night were the New York Woodwind Quintet, a virtuoso ensemble of the highest quality that brought to Washington a program well calculated to test and demonstrate its skills. Deak’s is the work likely to be remembered most vividly. The instruments brilliantly imitate the voices and physical actions of the donkey, hound, cat and rooster of the Grimm brothers’ tale, producing descriptive grunts, squawks, chirps, squeaks and gargles that students spend years of hard work learning to avoid. The players also recite key parts of the story, solo or in harmony – a more challenging assignment for wind players than for pianists or cellists. It is wonderfully amusing and leaves one wanting to hear more samples of Deak’s wild musical imagination.”

Dean, Brett (1961- )

Winter Songs, for tenor and wind quintet, after poems of e.e. cummings (2000)

Berlin: Boosey & Hawkes/Bote & Bock, 2002, 2001

Based on poems by American poet, e.e. cummings. Flute doubles on piccolo and alto flute; oboe doubles on English horn; clarinet doubles on bass clarinet, plus bassoon and horn. It was premiered by tenor Scott Weir and the Philharmonisches Bläserquintet Berlin in 2001.

According to the composeer: “It was the sheer fascination of an expat Australian with the unfamiliar extremes of a Berlin winter that inspired me to write my ‘Winter Songs’. They date back to 1994, when I was first approached by the Philharmonic Wind Quintet, however were not fully realised until 2000. I chose five poems by E.E.Cummings that all revolve around images of winter (and, being from his last, posthumously published collection of poems, perhaps confronting the ‘winter’ of his own life, as in the innocent childhood memories of Poem 52 for example), and grouped them into three movements with a lengthy instrumental introduction. Here much of the main material is introduced and explored.” See more notes on the individual movements and poems at https://www.boosey.com/cr/music/Brett-Dean-Winter-Songs/4760 . My Baby’s Smile

Delevan, New York: Kendor Music

Includes substitute clarinet part to replace oboe, bass clarinet part to replace bassoon.

Here’s the musicological riddle: We have a woodwind quartet by Christian Dedrick (previously listed as a quintet) and 2 quintets by Rusty (or Lyle) Dedrick, who were popular musicians and were both born the same year (and coincidentally died around the same time, too). They are both listed for works in Kendor Music’s catalog. But the catalog only lists last names of arrangers and composers and, also, features jazz arrangements by Art Dedrick (yet a another Dedrick). Although, library catalogs seem to have confidence in their composers’ identitities, for my taste there are too many Dedricks being mentioned here and too little documentation to have any confidence in exactly who composed what. If anybody can shed some light here, please contact me. [ Andrew Brandt ]

Quintet No. 1, Op. 20 (1987)

Wind Quintet No. 2, Op. 46 (1994)

New York: Peermusic, 1996

Movements: Back in time; In heaven; Under the earth; Far away. See the composer’s website www.migueldelaguila.com/ for a recording of this work and contact info. This work won the 1995 Kennedy Center Friedheim Award for excellence in chamber music composition. Recording by The Borealis Wind Quintet, CD: Discoveries (HE1030) on Helicon Records.

According to the composer’s website: The four movements are held together by an undisclosed program that takes the listener through four different places (movements), as would the four acts of a play. Back in Time has a primitive, ritualistic character. The flute, accompanied by chant, plays a simple, modal theme. The simple musical structure and melodic material are retained as the movement progresses. In Heaven is a delicate, relaxed and stylized Caribbean dance. Extensive new performance techniques and effects are used in this movement which at times makes the quintet sound like a delicate, distant percussion ensemble. Under the Earth is perhaps the composer’s darkest and most realistic musical depiction of death.… Far Away takes us to a busy scene in the Middle East. Several Arabic maqams and oboe solos, combined with a digeridoo sounding ostinato bass are used to create an exotic fabric in which the entire ensemble is challenged to the limits of their technical abilities before bringing the piece to a fiery conclusion.

Derbez Roque, Georgina(1968- )

Del viento, del Mar (2004)

México, D.F.: Ediciones Mexicanas de Música **

Commissioned by the Mexico City Woodwind Quintet (Quinteto de Alientos de la Ciudad de México). Their recording, taken from their album, “Sueños de una América” (Dreams of One America – on Naxos), is available on YouTube: https://youtu.be/p7E8nzJtmR8 . The composer is often referred to simply as Georgina Derbez. See also: http://www.georginaderbez.com/

** The Ediciones Mexicanos de Musica catalog lists a woodwind quintet, but not of this title. I think it would be this work since the composer’s website lists no other woodwind quintet, but please check before ordering.

Unlike many earlier generation Mexican composers, Derbez Roque’s Quintet does not use folk music as her inspiration in this work. The quintet is both modern and Impressionistic, with lots of note bends, wind sounds, and modern dissonance, yet is evocative of the title (Of the Wind, of the Sea). It is an introspective, slowly-developing work that should be attractive to ensembles exploring 21st Century quintet music. [ Andrew Brandt ]

Quintet for Woodwinds (ca. 1990)

ALRY Publications Etc., Inc., 1990 (P. O. Box 36542, Charlotte, NC 28236 USA.) Or see Toronto: Canadian Music Center.

3 Movements: Slowly; Melancholy, not too slow; Fast. A recording is available for listening at http://ummpdigital.com/derfler-quintet-for-woodwinds/ .

Although composed in or before 1990, the work is largely tonal, with only mild dissonances. The recording linked to above is not the highest sonic quality, but suggests the work has enough melodic and rhythmic interest to be worth programming by a more advanced student or professional quintet.[ Andrew Brandt ]

Originally from northern Alberta, Derksen may be the first ever classical composer descended from Cree Indian chiefs and Mennonite homesteaders. She combines her heritage with modern electronics in her compositions. 5 Bucks per Head, was commissioned by the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity in 2018. It’s unclear whether the premiere performance was by the Blythwood Winds or the Mistral 5 (a Saskatoon-based quintet). [ Andrew Brandt ]

Desportes, Yvonne (1907-1993)

Prelude, Variations and Finale on a Gregorian Chant (1930)

Cincinnati: A. J. Andraud, 1938 (now Southern Music)

This work won the Lili Boulanger Memorial Prize for 1931. Mlle. Desportes won the Prix de Rome in 1932 and later taught at the Paris Conservatoire for 35 years. She wrote over 500 works, but only the one quintet, plus a work for winds and piano and an Octet. The only recording (commercial or non-) I have found for the Prelude, Variations and Finale on a Gregorian Chant on the web is a portion of a Women Composers Concert at Emporia State University https://www.youtube.com/live/Mvjij3hoRPA . The recording quality is not great and the performance is not at the highest level. The Desportes work begins at the 16:40 timing mark. The work may be out of print, but check your local university library for a copy.

The WorldCat Identities database is the only source I’ve found that directly connects Tommy Desserre with G. T. Desserre. If correct, it appears that the composer may have used Tommy for his film scores and popular works, and G. T. for his “classical” works. One web link called him “G. Tommy Desserre.” This is another case where a French musicologist could help us.

Partita in F Major for flute, oboe, clarinet, horn, bassoon (arranger unlisted)

Recorded by the New Wind Quintet of the Südwestfunk on the Aurophon label. Duration: 17:40.

Carl Ditters von Dittersdorf wrote a lot of works for winds, and many other composers wrote works to which they attached Dittersdorf’s name, and the confusion still reigns in musicological circles. Dittersdorf did, indeed, write many partitas (parthias) for various combinations of winds, often for 2 oboes, 2 horns and 1 or 2 bassoons. As far as my research can determine, he never, NEVER wrote a woodwind quintet for flute, oboe, clarinet, horn, and bassoon. Even a reference to a Sinfonia Concertante for woodwind quintet and strings appears to be an arrangement. From time to time, publications and recordings pop up of arrangements of Dittersdorf pieces for woodwind quintet, which is all well and good. Some are more forthcoming than others about the fact that they ARE arrangements, however, and not the original scoring. Librarians (many overworked and underpaid, I am sure) can also add to the confusion. So be an educated Dittersdorf consumer. [ Andrew Brandt ]

SOUNZ had previously noted a longer Wind Quintet of 1967, but either that was an error or the work was taken out of circulation.

Emily Doolittle writes, “In this piece for wind quintet I will explore the soundscapes of the three forest regions of Canada that are closest to me: the Acadian forest of Nova Scotia (where I grew up); the boreal forest of Ontario and Quebec (where I camped many times during the five years I lived in Montreal); and the coastal forest of BC (which I visited frequently during my seven years on the West Coast). It is my hope that through drawing attention to aspects of these soundscapes in a concert context, listeners will have a new interest in preserving and protecting Canada’s forests and wild places.”

Wapango for Woodwind Quintet

Richmond, VA: International Opus

The composer’s original first name was Francisco. Wapango is an Afro-Mexican dance also known as a huapango. See also: http://www.paquitodrivera.com/

Lively, fun Latin-style rhythmic piece, based on a Mexican song. Recommended. [ Andrew Brandt ]

Aires Tropicales (1984)

Richmond, VA: International Opus 1994

Movements: 1. Alborada; 2. Son; 3. Habanera; 4. Vals Venezolano (Venezuelan Waltz?); 5. Dizzyness (homage to Dizzy Gillespie); 6. Contradanza; 7. Afro. Commissioned by the Aspen Quintet. Flute doubles on piccolo and alto flute, oboe doubles on English horn. Third movement (Habanera) uses only flute, clarinet, and bassoon.

This is a thoroughly delightful suite for both the performers and audiences. Except for “Dizzyness,” all the movements have a strong Latin feel, but the scoring allows all the instruments to shine. The composer has strong links to both popular and “concert” styles of music and melds both here. There are both rhythmic and technical challenges to interest the professional quintet. It’s been a long time since I’ve enjoyed performing a work as much as this one. The Contradanza is similar in style to Wapango, listed above. This work deserves to become standard repertoire for the woodwind quintet. There are many interpretations available on Youtube, but the Imani Winds may have the strongest. (Except that, since each movement is in a separate file, somebody appears to have used the wrong sound file for the Afro movement.) [ Andrew Brandt ]

Kites over Havana (for woodwind quintet) (arr. Valerie Coleman)

London: Boosey & Hawkes

Written as a remembrance by Paquito D’Rivera of flying kites over Havana, there appear to be different versions of this work. A WNYC Soundcheck video, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LRoFyWXK6vI , shows the Imani Winds playing the work, as a normal woodwind quintet, in the radio studio. However, the Imani Winds’ recording is billed as being performed with D’Rivera on clarinet and Alex Brown on piano. (If you search YouTube, you will also find a version, Kites over Havana, for piano and sax quartet.) Be sure to order the correct version.

The Elephant and the Clown (arr. 2013 by the composer for woodwind quintet)

London: Boosey & Hawkes

Duration: 8:45. The Zoar Ensemble has a SoundCloud performance availabe at https://soundcloud.com/zoarensemble/paquito-drivera-el-elefante-y-el-payaso .

According to D’Rivera: During my childhood in Havana, I loved performing in a certain TV circus—one that included a wonderful trio of musical clowns from Madrid called “Gaby, Fofó and Miliki”. That was such a wonderful place…full of light, colors, animals and fantasy. So when my colleague David Gould from Vandoren asked me to compose a piece for a double clarinet quartet, I remembered a hilarious occasion when Fofó—who was a big time prankster—managed to hide the elephant from his trainer, and then offered to accompany him to the police station to report the robbery. Try to imagine the face of the officer in charge while the poor man said: “My elephant was stolen.”

A Farewell Mambo (2013)

London: Boosey & Hawkes

Flute doubles on piccolo.

The Cayenne Fleur (2016)

Listed in the repertoire of the Zoar Ensemble. It is not listed (at least, not yet) in the Boosey & Hawkes catalog. Like many of d’Rivera’s works, there are various instrumentations of this piece.

Au Jardin, petite suite for 2 flutes; oboe, 2 clarinets, bassoon, and horn (arranged version 1908)

Paris: Heugel, 1908

Second flute plays piccolo in the third movement. Movements: Les oiseaux; Les petites visites; Gouttes de pluie. Originally a 6-movement work for piano written in 1901, three movements were arranged by the composer for winds. The score and parts of both versions are available for download from the International Music Score Library Project, http://imslp.org/wiki/Au_jardin_(Dubois,_Th%C3%A9odore) (Be sure to click on the “Arrangements and Transcriptions” tab.)

Some online resources give the wrong instrumentation for this work. I took it directly from the downloaded score. Part of the confusion may be that the horn part is listed as “Horn (F and E),” leading some to think that means two horns. (The first and third movements are “en Mi.” The middle movement is “en Fa.”) [ Andrew Brandt ]

Durán, Juan Fernando(1960- )

Música para títeres y gnomos (2000)

In the repertoire of the Quinteto de Alientos de la Ciudad de México (Mexico City Woodwind Quintet). Juan Fernando Durán appears to be a Mexican composer, distinct from the Galician/Spanish Juan Durán, listed above, even though they both appear to be born in 1960. But I’ve found only hints of biography online for Juan Fernando, so this is not definitive.

Durand, Marie Auguste (1830-1909)

Rococo Menuet, Op. 75

Boston, Mass.: Arthur P. Schmidt, 1948

Often listed as Auguste Durand, he started his career as an organist, later becoming owner of the Durand music publishing house, so it’s a bit of an irony that his work had a different publisher.
