5 movements: Moderato; Lento expressivo; Andantino; Calmo; and Scherzando.
Ron Klimko reviews: “…the movements are overlapped thematically by the transformation of small thematic ideas from one to the other. The mood is quite expressive throughout with a rhythmic Latin flavor, and generally quiet in nature until the spirited and rhythmic scherzando that ends the work with a nice flair…. [I]t deserves to reach a larger audience and I recommend it strongly to you if you are looking for interesting ‘new’ music for your quintet to play.” (The Double Reed, Vol. 24, No. 4)

Quintet No.2 (1967)
Library of Congress, Washington, D.C., 1967
Quintet No.3 (1976)
Composed for the Camerata Quintet, Western Illinois University.
Composer George has a confusing numbering system for his brass and woodwind quintets. His catalog appears to have Quintet No. 1 for woodwind quintet, plus Quintet No. 1 for brass quintet, and the same duplication for Nos. 2 and 3. It’s unclear if he arranged each piece for two different ensembles or if they are completely separate pieces. Quintets 4 & 5 are just for brass. See http://www.isu.edu/~georthom/complist.html .

Septet for Wind Instruments (1940) for 2 flutes, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, contrabassoon, and horn
Siegertshofen, Germany: Floricor Editions http://www.floricor-editions.com/
One movement. Duration: 1:30. The publisher calls this a “toccata-like piece in polytonal style”.
According to the publisher, ”The present one movement Septet dated 7 July 1940 turned up among the manuscripts in his estate. The work, that certainly was to be expanded according to the skeches in the same manuscript is on a very small scale, but displays a diverting charm and reveals the impressive abilities of a composer, who was at that time not yet 16 years of age.”

Arthur Cohn in “The Literature of Chamber Music” states that this work was completed at the end of 5 years of study with Arnold Schoenberg. The quintet was premiered in Barcelona in 1930 with the composer conducting!
Malcolm MacDonald, in his article for Grove, notes that Gerhard’s quintet uses serial techniques with neo-classical form, based on a a tone row of only seven notes “deployed with increasing freedom and admitting more quasi-diatonic reference than Schoenberg would have allowed himself at this period.” [Grove Music Online, accessed 2/27/2019]

Serenade (1892) for voice, piano, flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon and horn
Manuscript, probably lost
Although many sources list German’s Serenade as simply ‘for winds,’ The Musical Times, Vol. 45, No. 731 of January, 1904 ( see https://web.archive.org/web/20100317145245/http://www.edwardgerman.org/bio/57-biographicalsketch ) says the work was for voice, piano and woodwind quintet. Since German was conducting and writing music for several London theater productions around that time, it takes no great leap of imagination to suggest that the work may have featured one of his theater singers with members of the orchestra from one of his productions. Sadly, we’ll probably never be able to find out for sure. [ Andrew Brandt ]

Some program note fodder: One of the few composers who was also royalty (Prince of Venosa, Count of Conza), Gesualdo is today known mainly as the most avant-garde madrigalist of his day. In his lifetime, however, he was more famous for murdering his first wife and her lover (considered, by some, a reasonable response to noble infidelity during the Italian Renaissance). His second marriage was also rocky, although his new wife managed to avoid the fate of the first. Stories of depression and even consorting with witches surrounded Gesualdo, eventually launching lurid literary genres. A twentieth-century renaissance of interest in his music inspired operas, novels and paintings about the composer as well as modern evaluations, performances and recordings of his music. The Cosmos: Concerto for Wind Quintet and Orchestra
Five movements: Nebula; Comet; Solar Flares, Dark Matter, Fusion. Commissioned for the 100th anniversary of Holst’s The Planets by the WindSync quintet, the River Oaks Chamber Orchestra, the Lafayette Symphony Orchestra, and the Concert Artists Guild. CD tracks, of an impressive performance by WindSync and the River Oaks Chamber Orchestra, are available at https://soundcloud.com/rocoreplay/sets/roco-in-concert-space-the-final-playground . The full score is available to view on http://www.windsync.org/the-cosmos.html . (Don’t even think about performing this before studying the score!)
The woodwind quintet must memorize their scores and move throughout the concert space during the performance, which suggests that each player also needs his/her own wireless microphone. As befits homage to Holst’s work, the orchestration is brilliant, with occasional advanced sonic techniques such as glides, a bit of microtonal harmony (particularly in Dark Matter), and wind sounds from the soloists. Bordering on cinema-style-scoring, each movement has its own unique character. Worth listening to. [Andrew Brandt]

Gnattali, Radamés(1906-1988)
Suite para Quinteto de Sopros (1971)
Movements: I. Prelúdio; II. Valsa; III. Modinha; IV. Choro; V. Final. Duration: 9:50. The piece is dedicated to the Quinteto Villa-Lobos, which has recorded the work. A live performance is also available on Youtube in a performance by Minas Ventos.
Radamés Gnattali was both a serious composer and an arranger of popular tunes for radio. This work seems to meld both together in an original work. It is harmonically fairly conservative, but features rhythms of more popular Brazilian folk styles. My favorite movement is the Choro (fourth movement), although it‘s much more conservative than some of Villa-Lobos’s Choros. This a nice, light work likely to be enjoyed by audiences with spritely rhythms that keep it interesting for the players. Quintets who partner with a pianist should also check out Gnattali’s Divertimento for winds and piano (in our list of works for winds and keyboard), which may be the better work. [Andrew Brandt]

Morning Bird Scream -or- Morning Cry of a Bird (“’Rankovyi kryk ptakha”) (1994).
Unpublished. Available from the composer
Duration 12:00. Extended tonal and modal techniques.
Godzyatsky was a member of an underground group of Soviet Ukrainian composers in the 1960s known (in the West) as the Kievan Group, which also included Leonid Grabovsky, Valentin Silvestrov, and Vladimir Zagortsev. They had to quietly study the compositions of Webern, Boulez, Stockhausen, Penderecki and Lutosławski, whose music was considered decadent in the Soviet Union. Later, these composers would be known as the Kiev Avant-Garde. This may be the only woodwind quintet composed by members of the group, though. Other Soviet dissidents who wrote quintets (or quintet-friendly works) included Edisson Denisov, Sofia Gubaidulina, Arvo Pärt as well as more famous composers as Igor Stravinsky, Sergei Prokofiev. Jean-Marc Larsen of Quebec writes, “The music is in traditional style, and it gives a good idea of a wind quintet. After an introduction by the whole quintet, the instruments are introduced as characters in a story. Depending on the narrator and the time that you have, it can be a very educational and fun piece to the kids.”

Göpfert is best known to clarinetists for his clarinet concerti, but also for his concertante works and his contributions to the Harmoniemusik tradition. His quintet is not listed in his online biographies, and may be unpublished or it may be a misattribution. French Dances Revisted (2004) for double woodwind quintet
Brighton, UK:G&M Brand, 2004, http://www.gmbrand.co.uk/
Commissioned by a Consortium of USA High Schools. Movements: Overture; Allemande; Courante; Sarabande; Gavotte; Gigue. Duration: 15:00.
The composer states, “French Dances Revisited was conceived during an exercise I set some of my students, which was to write a variation on the Bach keyboard prelude in C BVW 939 for double wind quintet. Subsequently I thought it a good idea to take this same prelude and use it as a basis for a kind of Baroque suite for the same combination. I hope that what I’ve written doesn’t sound too much like a pastiche, but more as an act of reverence for the music of Bach which I have always found so life enhancing. The six movements of the work follow the model of the Baroque French suite. The first movement is an Overture featuring an angular introduction followed by a fugato in 5/4 time. There follows a stately Allemande led by flute and bassoon, a lively Courante in fast triple time, a mournful Sarabande featuring solo oboe and horn and a Gavotte that also pays homage to Neo-classicism. The piece ends with a Gigue, which makes much use of canonic writing. Towards the end the stern dotted rhythms of the opening of the work reappear before the mood lightens for an exuberant ending.
“In this piece I’ve also tried to follow a procedure of a certain flexibility of instrumentation which has been perhaps the hardest challenge. The two horn parts can be played on saxophones, the music of the second bassoon can be played on a bass clarinet and the oboe 2 part should also work on a clarinet.”

Gossec, François Joseph (1734-1829)
Concertanta (1785?) for flute, oboe, clarinet, horn, bassoon (with orchestra?)
Microfilm of ms. 31107. Bruxelles, Conservatoire Royal de Musique, 1971
Copy of the same microfilm is also available at the University of Iowa Main Library.
This work is listed in Grove Music Online as a work for flute, oboe, clarinet, horn, bassoon, dated 1785, with a reference to “Brussels, Conservatoire Royal, Bibliothèque, Koninklijk Conservatorium, Bibliotheek.” If this work and date is accurate, this would likely make Gossec the first composer to write for the woodwind quintet. This microfilm copy is the only catalogued source I can find for the work. (Logically, there had to be a physical copy before it was photographed for the microfilm.) ¶ However, there is a copy of that same microfilm at the University of Iowa. Their online catalog lists this as a concertante work for flute, oboe, clarinet, horn, bassoon AND orchestra. That would mean it’s NOT a woodwind quintet but a symphonie concertante – still historically significant, possibly the first work with that solo ensemble, but not the first woodwind quintet. Also, the year of composition is now listed with a question mark: “1785?” The modern online catalog for Brussels Royal Conservatoire does not list this work. ¶ And to make sure that nothing is ever crystal clear, an online search of the RISM database for this work finds a fragment of a ballet by Gossec “Concertanta a flauti, oboe, clarinetto, corno e fagot. concertanti” with the title “Le Premier navigateur” and another title “Le Pouvoir de l’amour.” This appears to be a reference to a manuscript that was a part of a set of works sold in Paris around 1860 and purchased by the Viennese V. A. Heck. A note added by a Charles Van den Borren says, “No work of this title is mentioned in the works of Gossec.” ¶ Obviously, there are as many questions as there are answers here. Gossec spent much of his earlier career as an opera director in Paris for various theaters, including finally the Paris Opéra. Grove Music Online doesn’t list any opera by Gossec with the titles above. However, since any opera presented at the Opéra was expected to include ballets, it would be conceivable for Gossec to have written a ballet to be performed with an opera that originated elsewhere. With all this evidence, I suggest that Gossec may have hastily composed (or borrowed) music from a symphonie concertante for flute, oboe, clarinet, horn, bassoon and orchestra for a ballet for that opera performance, which is why the manuscript is listed as a fragment and not a complete concertante work. This would make Grove’s listing of a 1785 woodwind quintet incorrect, although a concertante work of that period is still a significant find. Eventually, in 1789, Gossec resigned from the opera to dedicate his musical career to the Revolution. So if Gossec indeed was the composer of an inserted ballet for the Opéra, the year 1785 probably would not be that far off. There are still a lot of “ifs” in there, though. Clearly, more research is warranted. [ Andrew Brandt ]

A better recording is available on YouTube by the Collegium Musicum of Copenhagen, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DZ3HwKYDljg
As a young boarding-school student, Gounod was allowed to leave the school one day weekly to study harmony and counterpoint with no other than Antoine Reicha, the composer of 24 woodwind quintets, at the end of Reicha’s life. It’s a shame that Reicha didn’t pass on a love of writing for chamber winds to his young student, and Gounod’s Petite Symphonie is his only contribution to wind ensemble literature. [ Andrew Brandt ]

There are at least three composers named George Green and getting reliable info on any of them is difficult.
Green, Ray (Burns) (1908-1997)
Wind Quintet (1933) woodwind quintet with percussion
Ray Green was married to dancer May O’Donnell and many of his works were written for the various dance companies that she performed with or directed. Many of his scores, including the score to this work, are in the May O’Donnell and Ray Green papers, archived with the New York Public Library Archives and Manuscripts. Green also formed his own music publishing company, American Music Edition (AME) for his works and those of other leading American composers’.
