Kancheli, Giya (Alexandrovich) (also spelled Giia, Gija, Gila, Kantscheli) (1935- )
Wind Quintet (1961)
Woodwind Quintet (2013)
Hamburg:Musikverlag Hans Sikorski, 2015
Duration: 17:00. Commissioned by the Munich ARD International Music Competition. A video of the work performed by the Conoro Quintet is on YouTube.
It appears that Kancheli actually did write two woodwind quintet works with, essentially, the same title, one at the beginning of his composition career, another over 50 years later. The first one might not have been published, but, until recently, no single source listed both works, which added more confusion. A quick listening to the YouTube video of the newer work shows it to be a pensive, atmospheric work, with piquant harmonies and short dynamic interruptions. An interesting work for the professional (or advanced student) quintet that wants to display its sensitivity and dynamic control in performance. Worth a look. [ Andrew Brandt ]

An excellent recording of a live performance by the Imani Winds is available via a Soundcloud file on the composer’s website (and also on SoundCloud).
Ms. Kaoutzani explains, “Speak, Mind for wind quintet was composed as a response to various current events occurring around the world: violence, injustice, and – most annoyingly – a general public apathy. A seemingly peaceful start gives way to increased activity, and after that the texture remains generally busy throughout, with a game constructed gradually from musical material, moving from chaos to playful and innocent-sounding passages, from conversations to arguments, as if the music is reacting to itself, as if it is trying to escape it’s own reality.”

It is built on one of Þorkell’s most famous compositions, a hymn called ‘Heyr himna smiõ’.” (Thorkell Sigurbjörnsson also wrote several quintets included in this list.)

Variations Comiques (2002) for woodwind quintet and strings
Toronto: Canadian Music Centre
A set of ten variations on an original theme. According to the composer: “The theme consists of a 4-bar simple melody with an unexpected (comical?) final note, which is why I chose the title ‘Variations Comiques’. This 4- bar melody then alternates between the strings and the winds to complete the theme. ¶ Variations of the theme are then developed by each of the wind soloists and by groups of soloists in increasingly complex and virtuoso style, with the strings offering their ‘straight-faced’ comments. Not all of the variations are comical, however, some are sad, almost tragic. The variations reach a climax in a four-voice fugue (Variation 9) which leads into the final variation, a scherzo, in which the soloists compete with each other and with the strings to get in the last word.”

Duration: 12:00. 5 movements. The composer’s original name was Minnie Nerenstein.
A nice biography, by Paul Conway, of her remarkable life, but brief composition career is on: http://www.musicweb-international.com/keal/index.htm . Conway writes: “The five-movement Wind [Quintet] (1980) began as an experiment in composition. Minna constructed five different musical lines which later took on the distinctive colours of different woodwind instruments (flute, oboe, clarinet, horn and bassoon). These five sentences provide the bedrock upon which the rest of the work is constructed. The five-movement work was completed in January 1980.”

Kirchoff, Leanna
Midsummer in the Cottenwoods (2006)
See also: http://www.leannakirchoff.com/ .
The composer describes her work:
The architecture of Midsummer in the Cottonwoods is based upon sounds and images of the wind blowing through cottonwoods near my home on the Colorado Plains. There are three “wind” episodes in the first half of the piece that feature different manners of building and releasing intensity. These passages are broken up by sparsely textured interludes and points of complete pause. The third episode leads into a primarily homophonic section of sustained intensity. Merging into a penultimate calm, the flute, oboe and clarinet hover in their highest ranges followed by a return to the gentle stirring of the opening texture.

Kleinheinz, Franz Xaver (a.k.a. François Xavier; Karl Xaver Kleinheinz) (1765-1832)
Bläserquintett
German-born, trained in Vienna, Kleinheinz conducted and composed in Germany, Austria and Hungary. His later career was conducting and composing opera in Budapest. In all the reference materials I have seen, there is nothing to suggest that Kleinheinz ever wrote any chamber works for winds alone. This woodwind quintet is likely an arrangement of some other work by Kleinheinz by an uncredited arranger, or some cataloging mistake.

Friends with Liszt and an admirer (and conductor of) Wagner opera, Klughardt was in tune with the most modern trends in late-nineteenth century composition. This quintet is a good example of late nineteenth-century-style writing for winds; a very attractive work. [ Andrew Brandt ]

Soundings (1972, revised 1975, 1978) for woodwind quintet, percussion, harp, string quartet, and tape
London: Boosey & Hawkes
There are two ways to perform this work, one with triple orchestra, arranged spatially on the stage, the second with the chamber group listed above which records two versions before the performance and then performs the third portion along with the recorded music. There is a recording of the work with score overlaid on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ve_JwjEBQnU
Conceived as a musical interpretation of maritime soundings of ocean depths, the work is extremely dense tonally and leaves little for the uninitiated audience member to grasp on to other than varying waves of sound. This might, actually, be the whole point of the work. [ Andrew Brandt ]

Armadillo (2010) for woodwind quintet or reed quintet or clarinets or saxophones
Australian Music Centre: http://www.australianmusiccentre.com.au/
Available from the composer, https://www.paulkopetz.com
The composer states, “…the piece is a musical portrait of a very unusual animal going about his daily business of foraging, playing and simply surviving. Although the armadillo looks strange and rather awkward, he is confident, quirky and above all funky!” The piece “[a]lso exists in versions for: Clarinet Ensemble; Saxophone Ensemble; String Orchestra; Violin, clarinet, cello, piano; [and] Oboe, clarinet, soprano saxophone, bass clarinet, bassoon.”
If you go to the composer’s website (https://www.paulkopetz.com) he lists several works scored for “flexi chamber quintet,” which could include standard woodwind quintet. Most of his chamber music is designed for several combinations of instruments, with or without piano.

Yakini (2013) for wind quintet or flexible ensemble
Available from the composer, https://www.paulkopetz.com
The makeup of the wind quintet is not specified. 3 wind players also double on percussion. A marimba part may also be added.
The composer notes: “Yakini is a gorilla born in a Zoo. Although leading an existence of a celebrity, his life in captivity is a juxtaposition of happiness and illusion. The simplicity of his natural instincts is counterbalanced by the demands and definitions of the human world. As Yakini goes about his daily life in his own mischievous fashion does he really understand his predicament?”

Koželuch, Leopold (1747-1818)
Bläser-Simfonie in D Major for double woodwind quintet
Manuscript in the Prag Nationalbibliothek, Czech Republic
Recorded on Orfeo CD 442 981 by Corsortium Classicum.
The same recording also includes other wind works by Leopold Koželuch, but the instrumentation is not given: Partita for Winds in B♭ Major; Harmonie in F Major; a Sextet and a Cassation for Winds in E♭ Major, and these are just a few of his works for winds. It’s highly unlikely, though, that he wrote anything resembling a modern woodwind quintet, but with the instrumentation doubled (in the Harmoniemusik tradition), yes. [ Andrew Brandt ]

Serenata a Cinco

Dedicated to and recorded by the Quinteto Villa Lobos. Duration: 7:00.
After a slow introduction, much of the work features lovely sustained melodies in the upper winds accompanied by a busy syncopated accompaniment in the bassoon, which has a prominent role in this piece. Some nice contrapuntal writing, too. Worthwhile if you can find the parts. See directions on how to download the recording by the Quinteto Villa-Lobos on our blog. Otherwise, a recording by Quinteto Brasília is available on Youtube, but the recording has an amazing amount background noise, too. [ Andrew Brandt ]

Kvapil, Jaroslav (1892-1959)
Quintett Nr. 1 in F Minor (1925)
Quintett Nr. 2 (1935)
Jaroslav Kvapil was a native-born Czech and became a national figure in Czechoslovaka, particularly, in the city of Brno. He studied with Josef Nesvera in Olmiitz (1902-1906), with Leos Janacek at the Brno Organ School (1906-1909) and with Max Reger at the Leipzig Conservatory (1911-1913). After serving in the Austrian army during World War I, he spent most of his career (1919-1947) conducting choral and orchestral music at the Brno Beseda, Brno’s main concert hall. Neither of his quintets appears to have been published, so we might need a Brno-based musicologist to dig up the scores and publish them.

These two pieces make a nice short suite in popular Brazilian music style. If you can locate the music, it should be fun to perform them. (Then let me know where you found them.) See our Cracked Reed Blog to see how to download a recording of this performed by Quintetto Villa-Lobos. [ Andrew Brandt ]
