Brandt’s Woodwind Quintet List – Keyboard & Winds
This page features works for winds and keyboard, mostly four to five winds of a woodwind quintet along with piano (plus a few works using other keyboards, such as harpsichord, organ or even accordion). A few add another performer or two or more, and a few works for three winds and piano may have crept into the list under the cover of late-night darkness. I’ve tried to avoid works where the keyboard is just an orchestral reduction, but that might still be a performance option.
In concert with recent scholarship on women composers, this list now highlights their names with a different-colored background.

Alexander, Elizabeth (1962- )
Interior Music for piano and woodwind quintet
Order from the composer: Seafarer Press,1245 Ashland Avenue
St. Paul, MN 55104 or http://www.seafarerpress.com/works/interior-music
Duration: 10:00. All the movement titles are excerpted from various poems: 1. …the interior music, waking; 2..…it mambos the blue volts through my body; 3. …all your bones humming and buzzing; 4. …behind the ribcage, the gears that won’t give up; 5. …the heavy grooves keep turning. Do not confuse the composer with the poet Elizabeth Alexander.
The composer writes: “The music in this five movement work alternates between asynchronous waves of sound and that with a steady pulsing – the music of breaths and heartbeats which our bodies create by the simple act of living. The movements’ subtitles are short excerpts from four American poets who explore the ‘interior music’ of our bodies. The fourth movement, subtitled …behind the ribcage – the gears that won’t give up may be performed separately, as a short scherzo.”

Amberg, Johan(1846-1928)
Suite (1905) for flute, oboe, clarinet and piano
Edition Silvertrust, http://www.editionsilvertrust.com/amberg-suite.htm
Movements: Sequedille; Devant la Cathédrale; Ronde villageois.
The publisher offers some program notes: “The first movement takes its title from a poem by the French poet Jules Bois which Amberg quotes. A Seguedille is usually a sad song. This one recounts how a gypsy girl with nimble fingers has stolen his heart and then disappear[s]. The second movement, ‘In the Cathedral’, begins with the resonant tolling of bells in the piano, but each time the bells return, they get softer, as if they’re moving away into the distance. The winds also enter with a very full sound each time, only to fade away. This music is very mysterious, and also very beautiful. With the last movement, ‘Village Dance’, all the clouds disappear and the sun comes out. The first theme is light French ‘salon’ music, but in the middle section the clarinet breaks out into a jazz theme and the other instruments quickly join in because he’s having way too much fun by himself.”

Coleridge-Taylor, Samuel (1875-1912)

Deià, Mallorca: Soundpost, 2001 (available from Musica Mundana Musikverlag, GmbH, but see info below)
PDF of the manuscript score and parts available for free download from the International Music Score Library Project
Movements: 1. Allegro Moderato; 2. Andante con moto; 3. Scherzo and Trio; 4. Finale – Allegro Vivace. The manuscript score (from the IMSLP) also includes a Moderato movement which might be an early version of the first movement with cross-outs and scribbles. (A YouTube video of the work lists the first movement as Allegro energico, but that seems to be an error.) To order a contemporary edition (with corrections?), contact Musica Mundana at Kubula Verlagsservice, Thierschstraße 41, 80583 München; Telefon: +49(0)89 21025972; or Fax: +49(0)292547; or E-Mail: [email protected]. See also the Wikipedia article (English) on Samuel Coleridge-Taylor (not to be confused with the poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge).
This chamber piece by Samuel Coleridge-Taylor is a bit of an enigma. It was completely unknown to me until I happened to catch the end of a performance of a movement on WQXR, the New York City public radio station, in 2021. Although composed in 1893 (also listed as 1894), it appears to have been unpublished until 2001. It might take a bit more work than usual to get the modern edition from Music Mundana (see https://musica-mundana.com/) but it might be worth it to perform the work. ¶ Finding contrasting performances by The Lakes Area Music Festival (in full Covid protection mode) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0KL11hU5SxE and by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=1010555269420467 , the work sounds, to my ear, a cross between Dvorak and Elgar and very creditable for an early Opus 2. If you want to explore almost-unknown late Romantic era chamber music for winds and strings (or you are looking for music by an African-British composer), this is definitely worth a look. Falconi, Alfonso(1859-1920)
Sextet, Op. 60 for woodwind quintet and piano
This work was performed by the Boston-based Longy Club in 1908. Reviews were decidedly mixed. the more favorable one by a reviewer Elson, for the Advertiser: “Falconi did not attempt a falcon’s flight at the beginning and the first three movements might have been a conservatory student’s prize composition, but the finale was very much better. It contained a bit of fugal work (six-voices we believe) that was finely worked out. At no time did the composition become radical, and at all times it was well worth hearing, but, as intimated, its power, like that of a wasp, was in its end.” [From “The Longy Club, Season Nine, 1908-1909” from whitwellessays.com].
Farrenc, Louise (1804-1875)
Sextett in c-Moll, Op. 40 für Klavier und Bläserquintett (1851-52)
Kassel: Furore, 1996?
Duration: 26:30. Movements: I. Allegro; II. Andante sostenuto; III. Allegro vivace. An easy search in YouTube will find an excellent performance by the Omega Ensemble with pianist Kathryn Selby (in separate videos for each movement).
An excellent, neglected work, this sextet would pair well in a recital with the Mozart or Beethoven Quintets for winds and piano (which preceded it), or with Ludwig Thuille’s Sextet (which followed it). Louise Farrenc was the first woman appointed professor of piano at the Paris Conservatoire, and the piano part is appropriately virtuosic without overshadowing the winds. [ Andrew Brandt ]

One flutist doubles on piccolo. Duration: 7:00. There appears to also be a version for 4 bassoons and piano.
The composer writes: “The title refers to the continuous stream of energy flowing between the five instruments, mostly streaming upwards. The rhythm is in groups of 5, with hiccuping accents on different parts of these groups. There is a slower, more melancholy middle section which has quiet intertwining lines disturbed by more aggressive interjections. The mood then returns to that of the beginning.”

Gorb, Adam (1958- )
A Better Place (2006) for oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn and piano
Duration: 7:00. Commissioned by the Zephyr Ensemble of London.
According to the composer, “‘A Better Place’ was written in the shadow of the tragically premature death of a close colleague, Mark Ray, the Head of Keyboard at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. Rather than write something dark and funereal, I felt it more appropriate to celebrate Mark’s life and that of another that was taken away all too early: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The work is tranquil and whimsical in spirit, and is in one movement lasting about seven minutes. It opens with Mozart’s favourite Alberti bass on the piano and a naïve melody at the top of the oboe’s register. There are four sections that loosely correspond with the form of a sonatina. At the end the opening material returns; and the little codetta signs off with a tribute to two favourite works: Mozart’s Clarinet quintet and Stravinsky’s octet. The role of the piano in this group is that of a wind instrument with an exceptionally wide range: it only plays one note at a time.”

Rag-Sextet for woodwind quintet and piano (1972, rev. 2014)
Toronto: Canadian Music Centre, http://www.musiccentre.ca/node/22081
3 Movements: Lively; Andante con moto; Freely moving, not fast. Duration: 12:00. Second movement is scored for woodwind quintet without piano. A synthesized recording, the score, and expanded notes are available: https://ronhannah.com/ragsext.php .
The composer writes: “‘Rag-sextet’ is an early work, full of the vitality of youth, and reflecting my continuing love of Ragtime and Boogie-Woogie piano music. It probably owes more to the boogie tradition than to strict ragtime, but ‘rag-sextet’ rolls off the tongue more easily. The music slips smoothly and often between the two styles. In addition, it features bows to more academic styles: there is a raggy fugue in the first movement; the second is a more abstract study, perhaps a little sinister but still influenced by the popular styles; and the third contains a section of pure dissonant jazz, and a short tip of the hat to an Alberti-bass classical style of playing.”

Karl Nef, had this to say in the Schweitzerische Musikzeitung after the premiere performance in 1900 (translator not listed): “The Sextet… unmistakably uses the themes from Swiss folk music. The first movement begins with an Adagio non troppo introduction and leads to a Con fuoco main section which is brilliant and fresh. The second movement, Allegro molto vivace, is a little miracle, graced with agility, charm and clever contrasting sections. The short third movement has three brief sections beginning with an Adagio ma non troppo followed by an agitated Con fuoco middle part and concluding with a calmer Un poco piu andante. An Allegro vivace con brio tops off this first class piece.”

Hüttel, Joseph (Ignatievich)(1893-1951)
Divertissement Grotesque (1929) for woodwind quintet and piano
A Czech composer and conductor, he studied in the Prague and Moscow Conservatories and spent a large portion of his life, 1912-1946, in Egypt. The original score appears to be in the Coolidge Foundation collection in the Library of Congress in Washington, DC. There is a reproduction of the autograph in the Mills College, F. W. Olin Library, in Oakland, California.
Although Hüttel was working in Egypt at the time, this work won the 1929 first prize of the Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge Foundation’s competition for a work for winds and piano and received its premiere at the Library of Congress on October 7 that year. It was performed by the Barrère Ensemble with pianist Arthur Loesser. Wallingford Riegger heard one of the rehearsals and said the work was “exceptionally convincing. I think it marks the discovery of a composer of great ability.’ Reviewer Olin Downes for the New York Times gave it a mixed review, but included “the idiom Mr. Hüttel uses is employed with a clear and ready technic [sic], with brilliant instrumental effects, and with a general gayety and youthfulness of spirit…. [from an excerpt from Nancy Toff, Monarch of the Flute: The Life of Georges Barrère.] Some other commentaries however, including one in Lennox Berkeley and Friends: Writing, Letters and Interviews were less complimentary.

Karlsson, Stefan
Suite for Piano Trio and Woodwind Quintet (2000)
Copy in the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, in the music library
It appears the work is for woodwind quintet, piano and double bass, although that doesn’t completely explain the ‘Piano Trio’ part of the title. Stefan Karlsson is a jazz pianist, but there’s no comment on whether these movements are jazz inspired. The work’s first two movements are Prelude; Kristallen den fina plus an arrangement from Chopin’s C-Minor Prelude, Op. 28, No. 18 (arranged by Karlsson) as the finale.

Duration: 20:00.
The composer writes: “Centering begins with players spaced around the audience and concludes with the ensemble centered on stage. The piece is performed without an conductor until the final movement. The metaphor of spatial centering is extended to the musical material which progresses from atonal to key-centered tonality. Movement 3, ‘Pavane: Gathering,’ is based upon ‘El Bison’, an anonymous Renaissance dance. Parts are available upon request.”

Sestetto (1929, H. 174) for flute, oboe, clarinet, 2 bassoons and piano
Prague: Panton, 1986, 2nd edition
Movements: I. Prèlude: Poco andante – poco allegro; II. Adagio; III. Scherzo (Divertimento I); IV. Blues (Divertimento II); V. Finale: (Allegro) – Poco vivo. Duration: 14:44. Written in Paris between Jan. 28 and Feb. 4, 1929. The premiere performance was on the radio station, Berliner Rundfunk, broadcast in Berlin on Dec. 29, 1929. ¶ Originally for piano, flute, oboe, clarinet and 2 bassoons, the 2nd bassoon part has been (or can be) arranged for horn in order to perform with a normal woodwind quintet.
Nick Fitter of Australia says “This is a fantastic work & would probably have been played more often if written for the usual combination. It is a jazz/blues influenced work & fiendish for the piano, but lovely writing.”
Martinu also has a woodwind quintet and a pair of interesting nonets for winds and strings.
Maslanka, David (1943- )
Blue Mountain Meadow, Missoula for woodwind quintet and piano (1998)

Flute doubles on piccolo. Duration: 10:00.
According to the composer: Blue Mountain Meadow was commissioned by the National Symphony Orchestra, and given its premiere performance at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC by members of the NSO. “Blue Mountain is my favorite nature-walk place in the Missoula, Montana area where I live. It is noted for its wonderful views and its sense of calm serenity. … The result is a vigorous and challenging single-movement piece for one of my favorite instrumental combinations.”
Maslanka has also written four ambitious woodwind quintets.
Matthews, Colin (1946- )
Rainbow Studies, Op. 12 (1977) for flute/piccolo, oboe/English horn, clarinet/bass clarinet, bassoon, piano
London: Faber Music
Duration: 17:00.
Colin Matthews writes: My initial ideas for this piece were more obviously connected with colours than is the finished work, which consists of an abstract series of variations on a basic set of chords. Because these chords, to begin with, suggested specific colours to my mind, and because they are germinal to the variations (which are not ‘strict’ variations), the title ‘Rainbow Studies’ seemed appropriate. But this title shouldn’t be taken as being descriptive, so much as my own starting point for the work. ¶ A very brief introduction is immediately expanded, and followed by a cadenza-like passage for the piano alone. This ends with a violent distortion of the introduction, out of which the wind instruments emerge with floating chords. These chords become the (contrapuntal) basis of a scherzo: first wind alone, then a rather mechanical ‘trio’ with piano, and a varied development of the scherzo, which the piano dominates and eventually overwhelms. The central slow section is more relaxed. It leads to another version of the introduction, and then another, but shorter, scherzo (based on the piano cadenza). This is brought to a similar conclusion as the previous scherzo, and the slow coda is more overtly colouristic.
Matthews has also written Five Concertinos for quintet and other works including woodwind quintet.

Seven Lakes Drive for flute, clarinet, horn, violin, cello and piano
Paris: Editions Henry Lemoine, 2006
Premiered at La Grave, France at the Festival Messiaen au pays de la Meije Ensemble Let Temps Modernes.
According to the composer: “Near where I live, there is a large stretch of preserved land, a natural park (Harriman State Park) belonging to the vast Appalachian range where small forest covered mountains are spangled with artificial or natural lakes. A road crosses the park from end to end, the Seven Lakes Drive. It winds through the hills, revealing views of the seven lakes one by one. Horn calls, sinuous melodies leading toward more stable and more harmonic soundscapes, lakes of music, all the same, all different. ¶ Technically, the piece is based on the natural harmonic resonances of the horn and piano.”

Nazareth e Hubaldo, Ernesto (a.k.a. Ernesto Júlio de Nazareth)(1863-1934)
Faceira for woodwind quintet and piano
The composer is usually listed simply as Ernesto Nazareth. Recorded in 1977 by Quinteto Villa-Lobos, it was probably arranged specifically for them. The piano part, though, is a basic accompaniment which probably could be dispensed with.
This is a slower, waltz-like work with clarinet, flute and oboe solos, with some bassoon counterpoint. Based on the Quinteto Villa-Lobos recording, I find it not terribly memorable. [Andrew Brandt]
Brejeiro for woodwind quintet and piano
Recorded in 1977 by Quinteto Villa-Lobos, the work was probably arranged specifically for them.
A lively, dance-like work that makes you tap your toes. The piano part is purely accompaniment and probably could be dispensed with. See our Cracked Reed Blog post about Quinteto Villa-Lobos for a link to the vintage recording. [Andrew Brandt]

Les Deux Aveugles (The Two Blind Men) for woodwind quintet and piano

This work is based on the one-act comedic operetta about two con men presenting themselves as blind men. There’s no indication in the listing about which part or parts of the operetta are included, but it’s unlikely the entire work is transcribed. (There’s also no indication about it being arranged, but it seems unlikely Offenbach did it himself.)

Onslow, Georges (1784-1853)
Sextet in E-flat Major, Op. 30 (1825) for Flute, Clarinet, Horn, Bassoon, Bass, and Piano
Leipzig: Breitkopf & Härtel, ca.1825
Four movements: 1. Introduzione. Largo – Allegro vivace assai; 2. Menuetto. Allegro; 3. Andante con Variazioni (theme and 5 variations); 4. Finale. Allegro. Score and parts available for download from the International Music Score Library Project: http://imslp.org/wiki/Sextet,_Op.30_(Onslow,_George)
Sextett, Op. 77bis (1848) for piano, flute, clarinet, bassoon, horn and double bass
Koln: Fr. Kistner und C.F.W. Siegel & Co.
Paris: Heugel, 1972
Edition Silvertrust, http://www.editionsilvertrust.com
This sextet is Onslow’s own arrangement of his Nonet, Op. 77, which was scored for woodwind quintet and violin, viola, cello, and bass. Curiously, this version was published before the Nonet in 1851, becoming known as the Grand Sextour. Onslow also later wrote yet a third version of the work for piano and strings.
Septet in B-flat Major, Op. 79a “Grand Septet” (1849) for woodwind quintet, double bass and piano
Leipzig: F. Kistner (ca. 1852)
Movements: Allegro moderato; Scherzo: Vivace; Andante – Molto cantabile e grazioso; Finale: Allegretto. Duration: 35:30. (Op. 79bis is for strings and piano.) Parts and score available for download on the International Music Score Library Project website: http://imslp.org/wiki/Septet,_Op.79a_(Onslow,_George) .
A recording on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lLSorLyOxzQ reveals this to be a substantial and attractive work. ¶ One repertoire list, apparently succumbing to an wheezy spelling checker, calls this the “Grand Septum,” which suggests a very nasal interpretation. [ Andrew Brandt ]

Quartetto for flute, oboe, E♭ clarinet, B♭ clarinet and piano (1873)

The title is a misnomer, since it is really a quintet, but since Ponchielli often thought operatically even when not writing operas, perhaps it indicates the importance of the winds as a quartet of soloists (similar to a quartet of operatic singers on stage) in this work, although the piano is more than just an accompaniment right from the start.

Incidental Music for Barrie’s “The Admirable Crichton,” Op. 98 for woodwind quintet and piano (1955)
Duration: 9:00.
The Admirable Crichton was a comedy by J. M. Barrie that had a very successful initial run of 828 performances in London, several Broadway productions, and radio, TV and film adaptations. There’s no indication which production this incidental music was designed for (if any), but it seems unlikely the broadcast versions would invest the time in extra, incidental music. Barrie is better known today as the creator of Peter Pan. [Andrew Brandt]

Commissioned by the Koussevitsky Foundation, this work was premered by the New York Woodwind Quintet with pianist Rosalyn Tureck in a Library of Congress chamber concert of Feb. 19, 1954, supported by the Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge Foundation. Colin McPhee’s program notes are included in a downloadable PDF, from http://www.newworldrecords.org/uploads/fileAjQDL.pdf . A recording by New Art Wind Quintet with pianist Harriet Wingreen on piano is available on YouTube, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gf4WJhMivdo . Another recording with Gilbert Kalish and the New York Woodwind Quintet may be better, but you have to hunt for each movement on YouTube, starting with https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=svX9wAHDzz4 .
Not a concerto in the traditional sense of soloist with orchestra, it is the interplay between quintet and piano that allows all six players to be soloists in this work. To my ear, Riegger toys with some 12-tone ideas in the first movement, combining rhythmic intensity and counterpoint topped with early Cold War angst, to create a very intense 1950s dissonance. The second “Andante” movement starts particularly mournfully in the bassoon and flute, and the ensuing, carefully crafted counterpoint never cedes its intensity until the end of the movement. My favorite is the third movement where 12-tone ideas are completely abandoned. Instead, the pointillistic back and forth between piano and winds (with a few interpolated jazz rhythms) creates dramatic rhythmic energy that drives to the end, then closes with a mournful recap of the opening bars from the first movement. Highly recommended for the rhythmically-confident, aggressive professional quintet with the opportunity to collaborate with a first-class pianist. [ Andrew Brandt ]

Amsterdam: Edition Compusic, 1992
Leipzig: C. G. Röder, 1873
This work, apparently, can be performed successfully with the piano covering the orchestra parts. There are two versions of the orchestra parts, which were lost for some time. One of those versions was a recreation based on this sextet score, which was completed before the original parts were rediscovered. Rimsky-Korsakov, Nikolay (1844-1908)
Quintet in B-flat Major (1876) Op. Posthumous for flute, clarinet, horn, bassoon and piano

Edition Silvertrust, http://www.editionsilvertrust.com
PDFs of scans of the original score and parts available:
http://imslp.org/wiki/Quintet_in_B-flat_major_(Rimsky-Korsakov,_Nikolay)
Don’t expect the dramaticism of Scheherazade or Capriccio Espagnol in this work. It is a light, delightful, almost annoyingly cheerful piece with a chance for everybody to show off. The quintet was not published until after Rimsky-Korsakov’s death in 1908. [ Andrew Brandt ]
Rimsky-Korsakov wrote both his string sextet and this quintet for a competition held by the Russian Musical Society in 1876. The Edition Silvertrust website offers this translated excerpt from his autobiography: “After I had completed the String Sextet, I took it into my head to write a Quintet for Piano and Winds for the same competition. I composed the Quintet in three movements. The First Movement, Allegro con brio, in the classic style of Beethoven. The Second Movement, Andante, contained a good fugue for the wind instruments with a very free accompaniment in the piano. In the finale, Allegretto vivace, I wrote in rondo form. Of interest is the middle section where I wrote cadenzas for the flute, the clarinet and the horn to be played in turns. Each was in the character of the instrument and each was interrupted by the bassoon entering by octave leaps…And what was the fate of my Sextet and Quintet? The jury awarded the prize to Napravnik for his Trio. My Sextet received an honorable mention, but my Quintet and every other work submitted by all of the other composers were disgarded [sic., discarded?] without comment. I heard later that Napravnik had been lucky to have had a pianist assigned to his trio who was a superb sight reader and thus had performed his trio beautifully, whereas my Quintet was ruined by another pianist who could not sight read nor make heads or tails of it. Had my Quintet been fortunate in the pianist assigned to it, I am sure it would have attracted the jury’s attention.”

Quintet for Winds and Piano, Op.15 for flute, clarinet, bassoon, horn and piano (ca. 1830)

Alternate title: Grand quintetto pour piano, flûte, clarinette, cor et basson. Movements: 1. Allegro molto; 2. Menuetto – Presto; 3. Andante (in C minor); 4. Finale – Allegro vivace. There is some confusion between this quintet and a set of quartets, because both were designated Op. 15 by different publishers. This quintet is also set for piano and strings and the composer states that individual parts can be substituted between winds and strings. Schocker, Gary(1959- )
Sextet for woodwind quintet and piano (2014)
Falls House Press, via King of Prussia, Pennsylvania: Theodore Presser Company, https://www.presser.com/
Duration: 20:00. Movements: 1. Earth, 2. Fire, 3. Wind, 4. Water, and 5. Ether, In Memory. Commissioned by and dedicated to Jenny Cline and the Monmouth Winds. A performance video of the world premiere is available on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9H7uKpVIxyA . Performed by Jenny Cline, flute; Nicholas Gatto, oboe; Kevin Dayton, clarinet; Richard Sachs, horn; Linda Balavram, bassoon, with the composer at the piano.
The Monmouth Winds recording is far from the most polished performance possible, but birthing a new chamber music work isn’t always easy. The ensemble deserves kudos for commissioning and tackling the Sextet. The harmonic language is what I might call 21st century revisionist tonal style. In fact, the second movement strongly reminds me of the Poulenc Sextet and some parts of the the rest of the work bring to mind the early twentieth century French school (without the frenetic activity of Françaix, though). Although the work can be tackled by a good amateur ensemble, I think a top-notch professional ensemble could happily make quite a lovely performance of it. [ Andrew Brandt ]

Sextet (1994) for piano (left hand) and wind quintet
New York: Associated Music Publishers, 1994
Duration: 14:00. Movements: Prelude; Aria; Scherzo (Plaisanterie); Toccata. The Sextet was commissioned by Dina Kosten and the Theatre Chamber Players of Kennedy Center (in Washington, DC) and premered on March 5, 1994. It is dedicated to Leon Fleischer, a famous concert pianist who had lost (and later recovered) use of his right hand. Oddly, the composer’s own program notes (https://www.wisemusicclassical.com/) don’t specifically state that it was written for or performed by Fleischer, but a press clip confirms that Fleischer was the pianist in the premiere performance. Unfortunately, I could not find any mention online for the woodwind quintet he performed with.

However the Earsense website gives a much earlier publication date of 1889. ¶ Biographical info is scarce for Albert Seitz. He may be related to violinist and compposer Friedrich Seitz (1848-1918), but even that info isn’t confirmed online.

The circumstances of the Sextet’s composition is largely unknown. This two-movement work was probably composed between 1944 and 1952. Duration: 10:30. The title alludes to Felipe Lautaro (1534?-1557), a native Mapuche who led a resistance by indigenous people against the Spanish in Chile. ¶ The first documented performance of the Sextet is dated May 26, 1996, in Santiago, Chile, by the Hindemith Quintet and pianist Luis Alberto Latorre.

Quintet in E♭ Major (1898) for flute, clarinet, bassoon, horn and piano.
Duration: 25:00. A 2018 thesis (see below) notes the premiere performance of this work at the South Place Ethical Society in London. It was performed by the composer (on piano) and Frederic Griffith, flute; Julian Egerton, clarinet; T. Wotton, bassoonist; and Adolf Borsdorf, horn on December 18, 1898. Curiously, the same concert also included a performance of Ludwig Thuille’s Sextet listed below.
Quintet No. 2 (1937) for piano, oboe, clarinet, horn and bassoon
Premiere performance on December 12, 1937. See Jessica Clair’s dissertation below.
So far, I’ve found no info on locating printed scores of any chamber music by Edith Swepstone. Although Swepstone appears to have had numerous performances of her works during her lifetime, there has been little follow-up on publishing her scores or performing her works since. However, Jessica Clair Beck has written a downloadable doctoral thesis on “The Women Musicians of South Place Ethical Society, 1887-1927,” published in 2018, which includes significant info on performances by this composer and contains what is probably the most complete biography of Swepstone available, along with info on many other British women composers of this period! Lagny sur Marne, France: Musik Fabrik
The work has three movements, all played without pause: Prologue; Rondeau; and Epilogue. There’s also a version using English horn instead of clarinet, if you want all double reeds with keyboard. (Clarinetists who feel left out can respond with their version for 3 clarinets and bass clarinet with keyboard. There’s also a version for saxophones, too.)
Sonate Champêtre (Rustic Sonata) (1972) for oboe, clarinet, bassoon and piano
Lagny sur Marne, France: Musik Fabrik
Movements: Allegro Moderato; Andantino; Allegro Vivace-Gaiement. According to Colleen Corey White, the Sonate Champêtre was written to honor her friend, composer Henri Sauguet (a supporter of Les Six). The first and second movements use themes from Tailleferre’s Il état un petit navire. The composer wrote the work for a concert at the Paris Schola Cantorum, where Tailleferre taught counterpoint. All three of Tailleferre’s works for winds and piano are discussed in Colleen Corey White’s dissertation, Selected Solo and Chamber Works for Clarinet by Germaine Tailleferre: Historical, Compositional and Pedagogical Perspectives.

A thoroughly charming Romantic work with highly rewarding parts for all the players in the ensemble. Requires a top-notch pianist. The style, to me, sounds like something between Brahms and R. Strauss, with a bit of light, French insouciance in the 3rd and 4th movements, which is all the more remarkable in a work by an Austrian-born composer. One of the most fun chamber pieces I’ve played; it deserves to be heard much more often. Very highly recommended! [Andrew Brandt]

Tischauser, Franz(1921-2016)
The Bremen Town Musicians (or I musicanti di Brema -or- Die Bremer Stadtmusikanten) for bassoon, oboe, clarinet, flute and piano with narration (1982-83)
Winterthur: Amadeus Verlag, 1996
Duration: 35:00. In this version of the story the clarinet is the dog, the flute is the rooster, the oboe is the cat, the bassoon is the donkey and the piano plays the brigands. It appears there are versions in Italian, German, French and English; you might need to specify which language you want. There is at least one performance available on YouTube in English. The musicians augment the animal characters with some light “advanced” techniques, like multiphonics in the bassoon, reed sounds from the oboe, wind sounds and pitch bends from the clarinet and mouthpiece sounds from the flute.
A modern take on an old story, it would seem this work would be perfect for educational or young peoples concerts, but it’s length makes it beyond many children’s (and some adults’) attention spans. The piano doesn’t enter until 18 minutes into the performance, but eventually inserts quotations from other composers’ works to add humor. Each of the players (and the narrator) have extensive solos in the work, which also means each spends a lot of time sitting around as others perform. The narrator never actually narrates while the instruments perform, which makes it easier to use different languages, but it seems like a lost opportunity for the composition. In short, this is a quirky work which might make an interesting recital closer for an adventurous quintet. [ Andrew Brandt ]

Underhill, Owen (1954- )
Bay of Dew (1991) for woodwind quintet and piano
Toronto: Canadian Music Centre
Duration: 12:00. Written for the Arcadian Winds; premiered at the Tanglewood Festival.
According to the composer: “The ‘Bay of Dew’ is in fact a crater on the moon, but in my mind, I envisaged a tiny body of water that had been entirely created by the gradual collection of precious drops of dew as they formulated in the early morning hours. I saw myself as having created the composition in a similar way, by waiting for and collecting melodies and harmonies. The work is in five short movements; the longest and most substantial being the third. The movements are all interrelated, often using the very same groups of diatonic pitches, or slight variations.”

Sextet for woodwind quintet and piano (1951)
Duration: 17:08. Recorded by Timescraper Music Publishing EWR 9901 in 1999.
https://www.logosfoundation.org offers this (rather academic) description of the work: “Sextet (1951) for flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn and piano is a rigorous dodecaphonic composition, divided into seven sections. The stratification of the composition and the complex density of the simultaneous time structures immediately attract one’s attention: different meters (with various numbers of beats, but the same duration) are superimposed upon one another. This results in a polymetric progression of segments with varying instrumental coloring. The structure of the work is formed by the permutation of all possible combinations of the six instruments. On the one hand the instruments are treated extremely equally and individually; on the other hand, the imitation of intervals and rhythms intercedes, which gives rise to a continuous creation of new segments. The application and mixture of different techniques result in a peculiar experience: -klangfarbenmelodie+ next to a rhythmical density and the complex stratification of the different time structures.” Got it?

Flute doubles on piccolo; oboe doubles on English horn. 4 movements. Duration: 10:00. An audio recording of the work is available on the composer’s website.
The composer describes the four movements: The first movement’s lyrical, wistful, almost weeping lament is followed by the busy weaving motion of the spider-like second movement. After the bassoon has begun its filament of musical phrase, the other instruments join in to create an intricate, bustling, transparent web of sound. ¶ The plaintive melody of the English horn leads the third movement through a mysterious, distant and haunting path. The final, fourth movement begins with a nimbly triumphant, sometimes flippant, bell-like figure which gradually shifts, acquiring a surprisingly somber cast and strangely reminiscent of the second movement’s spider’s song.

Movements: 1. Adagio–Allegro moderato; 2. Adagio cantabile; 3. Menuetto–Allegro molto; 4. Finale–Allegro. Duration: 26:45.There seems to be some confusion over whether the work is Opus 5 or 6. The work has been recorded. Witt was known for imitating his Classical contemporaries and he may have been inspired by the Mozart and Beethoven Quintets for winds and piano. It appears that this work could also be performed by piano and strings. Witt also wrote a Septet for clarinet, bassoon, horn and string quartet (see the International Music Score Library Project).

Zverev, Nicolai (or Zveref)(1832-1893)
Suite for flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon and piano
The only reference I’ve seen to this piece is a tantalizing mention in a list of compositions “Khrestomatiia pedagogicheskogo repertuara dlia ansamblei. Vyp 3, Dereviannye dukhovye instrumenty” under the listed name “Zvrev,” published in 1971 by the now defunct Soviet Myzyka publishing house in Moscow. The only library copy I find in WorldCat is in the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. Since I cannot afford a trip to Scotland to check the source, this is a good mystery to end this list of works for winds and keyboard. [ Andrew Brandt ]
