An interesting, challenging work using some tone-row techniques but definitely not “standard” serial music. There are rhythmic challenges and lots of fast notes in the outer movements. The bassoon part is particularly challenging in the 3^rd movement, where it is often in octaves with the flute on the fast-moving theme. Written the year before her death, the work might be considered a summation of the career of a highly innovative and distinctive American composer. Recommended for the brave quintet. ¶ Historical and personal trivia: In 1932, Ruth Crawford Seeger became stepmother to Charles and Constance Seeger’s son, Pete Seeger, who became famous as a folksinger by the mid-twentieth century and continued on as musician as well as an environmental and social activist well into the 21^st, dying in 2014. This writer often performed wth Pete Seeger while on tour with the American Wind Symphony in the 1970s and remembers his banjo inscribed with the motto: “This machine surrounds hate and forces it to surrender.” [ Andrew Brandt ]

This work is included in a CD set from 2008, titled Americans in Rome, Music by Fellows of the American Academy in Rome, performed by The Curiously Strong Wind Quintet. A brief review by Uncle Dave Lewis on AllMusic.com called the work “summery, witty, and ingratiating.” An obituarial author, Daniel Felsenfeld, called it “genuinely something, frothy, ebullient, spiky—all the watchword Shapero thumbprints were readily in evidence.” Three movements of this recording, ‘Overture,’ ‘Song,’ and ‘Finale’ are available on YouTube. (One wonders if those are the only three on the CD set.) ¶ The only copy of the score I’ve been able to locate is in the Harold Shapero Papers in the Archives of Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts.

The Wikipedia article on Harold Shapero also mentions an early woodwind quintet from his Tanglewood studies that was appreciated by Aaron Copland. Could it have been a mistaken reference to a different quintet, Shapero’s 1929 quintet for piano and strings? But one assumes that Copland would know the difference between a woodwind quintet and a quintet for piano and strings. However, other than that anecdote, there doesn’t seem to be any evidence that the early quintet existed, at least not online. ¶ Six for Five is listed in the Harold Shapero Papers at Brandeis as mentioned above. Somebody would do their quintet a favor to go there and get a copy to perform. While you are there, there is another enigmatic reference to a Wind Quintet in 1994, separate from Six for Five. Maybe it’s another untitled copy, but I would want to also see it if I made the trip there! [ Andrew Brandt ]

This quintet is included in the repertoire list of the New York Woodwind Quintet. According to his Wikipedia article, Sherwood was a highly talented composer who won a number of competitions and fellowships and had a work performed by the New York Philharmonic, who later wandered around much of the world, composing but never making a financial success of his efforts, even so far as becoming known as The Beggar of Paris. He was arrested several times (once for defacing a poster of Elvis Presley). His life could be seen as a cautionary tale of a composer who made too many wrong decisions. According to the composer, “As the name of the woodwind quintet that commissioned this work is Con Spirito, the title ‘Restless Winds’ immediately came to mind. In this short work, five different ideas – each with distinct tempo, timbre, and melodic or gestural material – are intercut. No idea remains present for too long, however, since the winds are too “restless” to stay on a conventional course. The ordering of these ideas (which often vary with each appearance) is meant to seem unpredictable. The nonchalant bassoon material – a meandering melody that continually gets diverted – unifies the composition via its appearance at the beginning, end, and within the work. As with the title (and, hence, with the form), the dance-like nature of some of the main ideas also derives from free association with the name Con Spirito.”

Duration: 6:00. The work uses extended techniques including breath sounds, explosive attacks, tone bends, apparent quarter tones and multiphonics to make its unique music statement. What disoriented me most, though, was everybody playing their instrument backwards in the video.

The composer’s notes: This piece is inspired by “The Formula,” an expansive mural underneath a rail overpass created by Toronto street artist Joel Richardson. The mural’s first iteration was unceremoniously buffed by the City of Toronto, partially due to its political nature — its anti-capitalist imagery, satirizing business and consumption culture, is quite clear. Despite this removal, the mural came back in bigger and better form: larger, more colourful, and even more scathing.This piece, similarly, attempts to “buffer” an initial dissent, expressed as multiphonics, but these pervasive musical ideals are renewed with even more strength and clarity through an invasive, almost annoying profile of repetition and interruption. It also incorporates some of the numerical elements from the original mural, described as a “commentary on the mathematics of modern finance” through rhythmic and pitch relationships. Additional pitches are “grabbed” from multiphonics.

The work is in three movements: Movements: Allegro energico; Adagio pastorale; and Google translates the finale as “Oriental Game” (which may or may not be accurate). A recording by the Belgrade Wind Quintet of 1975 is available on YouTube.

His woodwind quintet appears to have been published for the first time after his death, as part of a collection of many of his works in several volumes. As such, you might check with your local academic library to see if there is a copy near you. (WorldCat is good for this.) ¶ A historic recording of 1975 by the Belgrade Wind Quintet appears to be the only one available on YouTube, or anywhere else. On listening, this woodwind quintet sounds unique. It has melodies of folk origins, polytonality, contrapuntal voices and some piquant dissonances. (The dissonances are less intrusive today than they would have been over 90 years ago.) The use of folk melodies and rising scales reminds me superficially of Endre Szervánszky’s much more tonal first woodwind quintet. But Slavenski”s quintet is much more adventurous and modern-sounding. If you can find a copy, this quintet needs a renaissance. The last recording appears to have been almost a half century ago. Václav Smetáček was also a conductor and an oboist. He was one of the founders of the Prague Wind Quintet in 1928 and remained a member until 1956, performing more than 750 concerts. 4 movements: Dance of the Bees; March of the Ants; Enamored Beetle; Fugue of the Fleas. There is a recording of this work on YouTube by The Mansfield Chamber Music Players, recorded in 2009.

This appears to be the only one of the quintets and arrangements by Smetacek that was published and there is currently only one recording of this work on YouTube (or anywhere else I looked). It may not be the most polished performance, but it does show About the Lives of Insects to be a light-hearted humorous work that is not shy about using some dissonance to illustrate it’s depictions. It sounds like it would be fun to play, too. This work deserves a professional recording, and could easily slip into the modern woodwind quintet literature, too. (There are several insect-themed works on these pages and an all-insect, or an all-animal quintet concert would not be out of the question.) [ Andrew Brandt ]

Davel’s Polka

This is likely one of the arrangements that Smetacek wrote for the Prague Wind Quintet. He also arranged some Bach Fugues for quintet, including the Toccata and Fugue in A Minor.
