This work was originally distributed through multiple generations of photocopies. It’s nice to see it finally published. [Andrew Brandt]

Van Parys, Annelies(1975- )

Meditation (2005) for double woodwind quintet

Commissioned by I Solisti del Vento (in Antwerp?). Duration: 7:15. A recording is available online at: https://soundcloud.com/anneliesvanparys/meditation-for-double-wind

As the title suggests, this is a meditative work. Listening to the online recording, it explores highly complex harmonies and harmonics, made possible with microtones, tone bends, a few multiphonics, flutter-tonguing and more. It appears the bell-like clangs are created by the complex harmonies (although I wonder if somebody slipped in a gong for the first note). There’s no melody, just the ever-changing sound textures. You will either be fascinated or freaked out by this piece. It would take an advanced modern music ensemble to do Van Parys’s work justice in performance. [Andrew Brandt]

A pensive, almost haunting, slow tango – more a reminiscence of a tango than an actual dance work. Nicely done. Would work well as a contrasting work in a recital of Latin American music. [ Andrew Brandt ]

Amazonian Dreams (2014-15)

Players are also required to play 3 percussion instruments: djembé, claves and rattles. Duration: 9:10. Commissioned and recorded by the Klarthe Quintet.

The composer writes: When the musicians of the Klarthe Quintet came to ask me to compose a piece for them, I had a premonition that the experience would lead to something rather original… Maybe the personalities of these five musicians played a big part: I immediately felt the need to use their vitality and their inventivity in a non-conventional way. The idea of making them play percussion instruments too established itself in order to create bonds and particular sound fields individual to these strange ‘Rêves’ of a deep green forest, ever-changing but repetitive, magic and dangerous. It was also a way to overcome the acoustic limits of the wind quintet, by using a style of writing which produced an original sound for this ‘classical’ chamber music scoring. The remarkable ‘Summermusic’ by Barber which, having often played the wind quintet repertoire, I knew very well, did not serve as a model, but as an invitation. I thank the musicians of the Klarthe Quintet for having taken on the challenge so readily, and to have accepted to produce the sounds of the djembé, claves and rattles that made this journey towards new acoustic perspectives possible.

This quintet feels like an enigma. After seeing this work on one list, I’ve been unable to find any other evidence online that this quintet exists. I suspect that it’s a misattribution to the work for quintet, viola and percussion below. Searching on YouTube seemed to find recordings of every work except the one I was trying to find, too.

Technically, its for flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon and English horn, not French horn, but is often performed with (an adventurous) French hornist. It’s one of my favorite pieces for the quintet. Challenging for all the players. We called the final chord a “primal scream.” See the article about Heitor Villa-Lobos and his quintet in our Roaring Twenties Woodwind Quintet Series. Choro Negro(arr.? by Fernando Costa)

Recorded in 1977 by Quinteto Villa-Lobos and probably arranged specifically for them. It’s unclear whether Fernando Costa arranged the work or had some other part in its composition. The recording by Quinteto Villa-Lobos is now available on YouTube at https://youtu.be/Az9ScQGHEDs .

This is a slow, pensive tune (a slow Choro) with some lovely melodies. The arrangement begins with a slower oboe solo followed by clarinet and flute solos. It brings out the “crying” nature of the Choro, which is part of the name. I think this could make a nice recital piece or part of a set of Brazilian compositions. See our Cracked Reed Blog post about Quinteto Villa-Lobos for a link to their recording. [Andrew Brandt]

arrangements

Two Pieces for Children’s Concerts:

1: Chiapanecas “The Mexican Clapping Song”

2: Variations on “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star”

San Diego, CA: Neil A. Kjos Music, 1985

These two light works are published together. Chiapanecas is particularly good for educational concerts for elementary kids – especially if you try to teach them when to clap and when not to. The Twinkle variations are each designed to display one of the members of the quintet for school concerts. The suggested narration is a bit sappy but the music is interesting. [Andrew Brandt]
