The New York Times: “The piece begins and ends with imposing octaves, but at its heart seems to be a kind of heavenly gossip, with the angels graciously, sometimes lyrically, nattering on about this and that. Zemlinsky, Alexander von (or Zemlinszky) (1871-1942)
Humoreske (Rondo) (1939)
Vienna: Universal Edition, 1993, 1978
Available from the International Music Score Library Project. http://imslp.org/wiki/Main_Page (not in the public domain in the U.S.)
Zemlinsky was a friend and brother-in-law to Arnold Schoenberg, but does not appear to have emulated Schoenberg’s composition techniques. He fled Germany in 1933 to Austria, then left Austria after the Anschluss in 1938 and eventually landed in New York. The Humoreske was written at a time he was struggling to make a living in the U.S., likely before he had a stroke in the fall of 1939. ¶ In contrast with his gloomy prospects after leaving Europe, the Humoreske is a spright, happy, melodic, 1-movement work with some technical sections. Recommended for student and professional quintets. [ Andrew Brandt ]

Malà Serenáda (Little Serenade) (1974)
Praha: Panton, 1982
Flute doubles on piccolo. Duration: 14:00. Movements: Marcia; Danza; Finale.
It’s dangerous commenting after just hearing excerpts, but there seems to be no full recordings available of this work online. The Czech MusicBase website (www.musicbase.cz) has one-minute excerpts of each of the three movements on its site. They indicate that the work is a light, melodic, often jouncy, piece. It doesn’t sound too difficult, technique-wise. Creating a recording of the work just to share with others would be a good project for a quintet, if you can find a copy. [ Andrew Brandt ]

From the composer’s website: “How does an audience imagine a composer at work? … What, though, would it look like when he goes on holiday? ¶ Lying on the beach, sipping the milk of a young coconut while listening to the sound of the sea and the cicadas, the sand swirling between his toes? … Perhaps, too, he is occasionally to be found at the tennis court, idly lobbing moon balls at his opponent. A bit of guitar music to go with that? Why not…? (trans. Alwyn Tomas Westbrooke)
