“This work is based on the use of five notes, D, E, F, A and B, that are distributed amongst the five instruments. As the work develops ever more larger leaps are used as well as increasing chromaticism. In addition, the composer integrates displaced loops and extended techniques, such as aeolian sound, singing while playing, key slaps and breathing noises.”

Quinteto en Re menor
Manuscript: Archivo Sinfonico de la S.G.A.E., Madrid
Duration: 17:00. Movements: Allegro assai; Andante; Allegro molto animato.
Different sources give different years for Echevarria’s birth (1898, 1900) and for his death (1958, 1963, 1965). He appears to also be known as Victorino Echevarría López. This work might be the Quintet de Viento of 1955 in another list. As you can see, there is a lot of imprecision about this composer, which carries on to the next piece, too. [ Andrew Brandt ]

Maninya III (1985)
Universal Edition, [1996]
Duration: 10:00. Work was revised and renamed Incantations. See also: http://www.rossedwards.com/
From the composer: “In the 1980s I composed a series of instrumental and vocal pieces under the generic title maninya.… The word maninya, extracted from a nonsense text I set to music in Maninya I (1981) for voice and cello, came to denote certain characteristics of the music I was writing, which had acquired a mesmeric, chant-like quality through varied repetition and kaleidoscopic interplay of material within a narrow range of limitations. There is also evidence of my developing interest in ritual music from various non-western sources.”
Incantations (1985, revised 2006)
Grosvenor Place, NSW: Australian Music Centre, 2006
Duration: 12:30; in 3 movements. The work was previously titled “Maninya III,” revised in 2006 and re-named “Incantations.” See also: http://www.rossedwards.com/incantations-for-wind-quintet/ .
The Laughing Moon, five bagatelles for wind quintet (2012)
Grosvenor Place, NSW: Australian Music Centre, 2006
Duration: 13:00. Movements: 1. Laughing dance; 2. Interlude with imaginary birds; 3. Ecstatic dance; 4. Moon song; 5. Clapping dance.
According to Ross Edwards: “When I was fortunate enough to receive a commission from Susan Gregory to compose a work for wind quintet, I decided that the repertoire for this combination could use some music that was ‘light but not trite’. Accordingly, I aimed at being listener friendly while at the same time seeking to engage at a deeper level. ¶ Naturally I took the opportunity to show off the brilliant virtuosity of The New Sydney Wind Quintet – based at the Sydney Conservatorium – for whom the work was composed. Some of the music draws on material from other works of mine and this has been substantially remodelled for its new context while retaining its original ethos. ¶ The title derives from the first and the fourth movements: Laughing Dance is based on an earlier work whose title, Djanaba, comes from the people who originally inhabited the Sydney Basin. It means laughter, which I felt was in keeping with the light-hearted spirit of the music. In the brief, joyous finale, Clapping Dance, the horn player is asked to play Aboriginal rhythm sticks.”

Eisler, Hanns (1898-1962)
Divertimento, Op. 4 (1923)
Wien: Universal Edition, 1977
2 movements: I. Andante con moto; II. Thema mit Variationen. Duration: 7:00. Eisler was studied with Arnold Schoenberg between 1919 and 1923 (with a brief interlude to also study with Anton Webern) and wrote his own woodwind quintet at about the same time as his teacher was writing his woodwind quintet. (Eisler and Schoenberg would soon have a falling out as Eisler turned to Marxist political and artistic principles.) Like Schoenberg, however, after Hitler rose to power Eisler was driven out of Germany and eventually settled in Los Angeles, California. Unlike Schoenberg, Eisler was brought before the House Committee on Un-American Activities and accused of being the “Karl Marx of music” and a Soviet agent. (His own sister testified against him.) He was deported in 1948 and forced to return to Europe, eventually landing in East Germany where he remained for the rest of his life. There is an extensive biography of Eisler titled The Kaleidoscopic Contradictions of Hanns Eisler: 1898 – 1962 one the website Forbidden Music.
Although Arnold Schoenberg’s monumental Quintet of 1934 marks a landmark in his development of 12-tone music, it may surprise many that one of his students, Hanns Eisler, beat Schoenberg in finishing his own 12-tone quintet by a few months. An excellent recording by Soni Ventorum is available on YouTube, with accompanying score in the video. Although Eisler’s work appears to have many of the technical, rhythmic and ensemble challenges as Schoenberg’s Quintet, Eisler’s is only the two movements (and about 33 minutes shorter) and sounds, to these ears, lighter in both its scoring and its overall aesthetic. Some of the variations in the second movement made me chuckle. This work would probably be more approachable to twenty-first century audiences than his teacher’s. (I would be wary about programming both quintets in one recital, but prove me wrong!) [ Andrew Brandt ]

Elgar, Edward William (1857-1934)
Music for Woodwind Quintet, Op. 6 (for 2 flutes, oboe, clarinet and bassoon or cello) (1878-1881).
22 pieces have been, somewhat haphazardly, included under this opus including one which is 4 movements long. They were unpublished until 1976, edited by Richard McNichol who divided the pieces into the 7 volumes below. Written for his own use, Elgar played bassoon AND cello on these pieces. Taken together, they are a substantial portion of Elgar’s early work which only recently came to light. See Arthur Cohn, “The Literature of Chamber Music” for much more info on these volumes.
These works were recorded by the Athena Ensemble in their original instrumentation in 1978, released in 1992 by Chandos (CHAN 6553). Very brief sound samples are available at http://www.allmusic.com/album/elgar-complete-works-for-wind-quintet-mw0001946254 . The site also features a bit of a condescending review by James Leonard. (I wish I knew which Mozart wind quintets he believes Elgar modeled his pieces after, since Mozart didn’t write any, except the piano quintet.) More recently, several of these recordings have found their way to YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLXc3pZCEfX3ZR0yWYDqN843L9lj7WZoyw .
Below, first see the original 7 volumes (with timings), then newer printed versions of these works (for both the original instrumentation and arranged for standard woodwind quintet).
Vol. I: Six Promenades (1878) (14:00)

The Belwin Mills publications appear to be just for the original scoring, without any arrangement for the standard woodwind quintet instrumentation. See below for the Trevco publications with both.

Elgar reportedly liked this set the best out of the entire collection. Movements: No. 1 Nancy (1:30); No. 2 Mrs. and Miss Howell (1:23); No. 3 (1:10); No. 4 (2:05); No. 5 (1:30).

“Nimrod” Variation 9 from The Enigma Variations, Op. 36 (arr. Jeanie Murrow)
Salem, Ct.: Cimarron Music Press, 2007. cimarronmusic.com
The only variation of the Enigma Variations frequently performed on its own, this and Barber’s Adagio for Strings are often performed as memorial works. Honestly, it‘s hard to see how a quintet could match the dramatic impact if used for this purpose and, if taken as slow as usually done with strings, there might be an endurance issue, too. (I’m willing to be proven wrong, though.) [Andrew Brandt]

Ru’akh Quintet (1995)
Tel Aviv: Israel Music Institute
Duration: 10:00.
According to the composer, “Ru’akh in Hebrew literally means ‘wind’. Ru’akh Quintet was composed for the New Israeli Woodwind Quintet… I wanted the piece to feature the individual character of each of the members of the quintet. The piece is built of six sections, five of which are instrumental solos, one for each member of the group, while the others are accompanying. The remaining section acts as a middle section where all are playing together on an equal basis.”

According to Catherine Gerhart (Annotated Bibliography of Double Wind Quintet Music), this work was “Originally written in 1980 as an historical music play for voice and piano. Later parts of the musical were rewritten for double wind quintet. It is very tonal with the music descriptive of the moods in the play. The tunes are singable by 11 year olds.
“This piece was played by various groups at the summer school at Little Benslow Hills, Hitchin, Hertfordshire. Later, in 2002 part of the suite was played by New Harmonie in Horsham, Sussex.”

[See Kristin Woodward’s “John Barrows and His Contributions to the Horn Literature’, Florida State University Digital Library.]
Barbera Secrist-Schmedes, in Wind Chamber Music, describes this work as “contrapuntal in style and similar to Fine‘s Partita in that the focus is on movement of parts rather than on instrumental color. Etler is economical–many times only two voices sounding.”
Arthur Cohn in “The Literature of Chamber Music” informs us that Etler was “a first rate oboist,” and that this work‘s “sonorities are a constant joy of fresh discovery…”

Very challenging 4-movement work, using serial techniques. Has some lovely bassoon solos (bassoonist needs to read treble clef for third movement). Haven’t performed the work but would like to. [ Andrew Brandt ]
Arthur Cohn calls this “Sterner, stronger soundstuff” than Etler‘s first quintet, and “no nonsense.”
