Hába, Alois(1893-1973)

Fantazie for Nonet in twelve-note system No. 1 , Op. 40 (1931) for woodwind quintet, violin, viola, cello, double bass

Munich: Filmkunst-Mujsikverlag, 1993

1 movement. All four Nonets were written for the Czech Nonet (which consisted of woodwind quintet and 4 strings), and they were all recorded for Prague’s Supraphon Records. Although Hába was probably the first composer to write quarter-tone and sixth-tone music, it appears the Nonets use standard intonation and notation.

This Sextet might actually be the rehearsal version with piano reduction for A Dance Suite for 5 wind instruments and orchestra. That work appears to be scored for flute, oboe, 2 clarinets, and horn with orchestra. Or maybe this is a separate work.

Arthur Cohn in “The Literature of Chamber Music” describes this as “Czech Romantic” music. “…but its sheer romantic prose does not date the music and thereby destroy it. Ideas and sonorities and skillfully handled designs are clear, and the light flavors applied to the tried and true formal recipes add zest to the results.” (See Cohn for description of several movements.)

Freeing the Caged Bird

Vivace Press

The composer: “Freeing the Caged Bird is a four-movement tribute inspired by the literary works of four native St. Louis women…. The first movement is based on the book I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, by Maya Angelou, who is regarded as one of the great voices of contemporary literature. Inspired by Sara Teasdale’s poem “Sunset St. Louis” the second movement evokes the swirling, twilight imagery of her poem. The third movement represents Kate Chopin’s then notorious novel The Awakening, first published in 1899. The last movement, based on Emily Hahn’s book, Hong Kong Holiday, expresses the joie de vivre of a woman who refused to accept society’s dictums.”

Harberg, Amanda(1973- )

Suite for Wind Quintet (2017)

King of Prussia, Pennsylvania: Theodore Presser Company http://www.presser.com/

Duration: 18:00. Movements: Cantus; Furlana; Fantasia; Cabaletta. Commissioned by the Dorian Quintet. A video recording of the Dorian Quintet performing this work is available on the publisher’s website.

The publisher says that “Each movement has a degree of archaic inspiration (seen in the movement titles)…” But do not think the composer is simply repurposing ancient musical forms. On first listenng, yes, the work is somewhat conservative harmonically in comparison with some of the new harmonically dense quintets out there, but it also has rhythmic energy, constantly switching counterpoint, and many beautiful musical moments. While it’s not avant-garde by 21st century standards, it is a lovely, energetic work with plenty of challenges for the players and the ensemble.

There are now (in 2023) plenty of good 21st century works for woodwind quintet, but if you are looking for new music, definitely give this a listen! I predict this will become a popular work in the quintet repertoire. Highly recommended. [ Andrew Brandt ]

Harbison, John (1938- )

Woodwind Quintet (1978)

New York: Associated Music Publishers, 1979

Duration: 23:00. Recorded CRI S-436. Commissioned by the Naumburg Foundation and premiered by the Aulos Quintet. Recorded many times, including by the Lieurance Woodwind Quintet. Movements: Intrada; Intermezzo; Romanza; Scherzo; Finale.

A very difficult, rhythmically complex work. It has attained some popularity in professional American woodwind quintets. The bassoon part has quite a few high E’s and other finger twisters. Other parts are similarly challenging. Parts have many note errors in them to clean up, too. Allow lots of rehearsal time! [ Andrew Brandt ]

“Serenade” from String Quartet No. 68 (?) (arr. Tony Turrill)

Norvik Sheet Music, http://www.norviksheetmusic.co.uk/

The provenance of this arrangement is questionable, since String Quartet 68 (one of Haydn’s last works, incomplete) appears to be spurious, particularly since the actual quartet doesn’t appear to have a section entitled “Serenade.” The publisher’s (rambling) program notes don’t help. However, a 35-second excerpt on the site reminds me of another piece, which an actual quartet player might be able to recognize immediately.

Haydn Symphony arrangements (excerpts)

“Allegretto” (2nd movement) from Symphony, No. 11 [sic.](arr. G. E. Holmes)

Oskaloosa, Iowa: C.L. Barnhouse, 1935

Inexplicably, the 2nd movement Allegretto arranged here is not from “Symphony No. 11” but, clearly, from Symphony No. 100, the “Military Symphony.” It’s the 8th of the London Symphonies (not the 11th). The actual Haydn Symphony No. 11 has no Allegretto. To make things even more bizarre, some catalogs have confused 11 with Roman numeral II and listed this as being from “Symphony No. 2.” [Andrew Brandt]

“Minuet” from Haydn Symphony No. 11 (arr. G. E. Holmes)

Sinfonia (1949)

Associated Music Publishers, NY. 1957

Duration: 8:00.

The Sinfonia is a very nice one-movement work of moderate difficulty and a slight Hindemithian feel. Heiden frequently wrote solo and chamber works for his colleagues at Indiana University and elsewhere. The Sinfonia, however, was written for the New York Woodwind Quintet. [See Kristin Woodward’s “John Barrows and His Contributions to the Horn Literature”, Florida State University Digital Library.] Bassoonists should also look at Heiden’s Serenade for bassoon, violin, viola and cello, written for Leonard Sharrow and string players of the Detroit Symphony, if I remember correctly. (I was coached on the work by both Sharrow and Heiden for an Indiana University performance.) The composer was known to fellow music faculty at Indiana University as “Heiden non Papa.” (Get it?) IO (2004) for woodwind quintet

Oslo: Norsk Musikforlag, 2015

Duration: 12:00. Re-composed from a 1991 brass quintet. There is also a version for brass and percussion. Movements: 1. Agitato; 2. Misterioso; 3. Feroce. Duration: 12:00. This work and the Circus Suite are recorded by Houthandel Antwerpen.

The composer writes: IO is a moon of the planet Jupiter, which has an enormous volcanic explosive quality. This work has a powerful, dynamic atmosphere, in which the utter of the instruments’ possibilities are explored.

Circus Suite (2004)

Oslo: Norsk Musikforlag

Arranged by the composer specifically for children’s concerts, based on an 1992 work for flute and piano. Both IO and Circus Suite were recorded by the Houthandel Antwerpen ensemble in 2010. www.ensemblehouthandel.be

From the composer’s website (https://www.wimhenderickx.com): There are five parts, each reflecting a circus scene. In the introduction the listener is plunged in a typical circus atmosphere. In the second part there are the jugglers and tightrope dancers (light and sharp). Then comes the wild animal tamer, a bit mysterious and looking for danger. The acrobats and the clowns are respectively supple and amusing. At the end (part 5) there is the parade where all the artists present themselves again before the public. This is music without pretention, which tries to stir up the imagination of children and adults.

Suffolk, UK: Deben Music, 1996, www.debenmusic.co.uk.

Second horn must also play woodblock. Duration: 3:40.

The ballet, La Fille Mal Gardée, has a long history of performances with music ranging from a pastiche of folk tunes to different scores by several composers, including Ferdinand Hérald’s 1828 adaptation of another score of 1789. John Lanchbery (1923-2003) later re-orchestrated the work, including new music for the “Clog Dance.” That may be the basis of this arrangement. So it may be more the music of Lanchberry than Hérald. Wikipedia has a long article on the convoluted history of this ballet. [Andrew Brandt]

Eight British Folksongs

Lustleigh: Westerleigh Publications, 1995

There is a Peter Hill (b. 1948) who is a specialist on performance of Messaien and other difficult contemporary composers, but that doesn’t seem to fit the persona for arranging British folksongs for quintet. I think this is a different Peter Hill. [ Andrew Brandt ]

New York: Boosey Hawkes, Belwin, 1940

A German violinist and composer, he emigrated to the USA and, at age 26 (1893) joined the Chicago Symphony Orchestra as Principal Second Violin in its third season and continued to perform with them until 1919. He was regularly published by André so one can assume that the actual composition of his quintet was not long before its publication in 1923. His composition style has been described as Romantic, but no description of Capriccio seems to exist online.

Pastel & Oil (1997)

Grosvenor Place, N.S.W.: Australian Music Centre, 1999

See also: www.wendyhiscocks.com , also: http://www.australianmusiccentre.com.au/ Duration: 10:00. Uses Clarinet in A. Movements: Morning song; Scherzo; Nocturne; Waltz.

According to the composer, Pastel & Oil takes inspiration from four paintings. ‘Morning Song’ relates to The Sunlit Tower by Australian artist Lloyd Rees, ‘Scherzo’ and ‘Nocturne’ to Nicotiana and Jack-in-the-Pulpit, paintings of flowers by American artist Georgia O’Keeffe. In ‘Nocturne’ the flower’s black petal and oriental-like white stamen are reflected by the oboe and bassoon duet in the piece’s middle section, with a sense of richness and dark mystery. ‘Waltz’ follows an untitled pastel by Cheryl Stoll Thygeson, depicting a celestial form in the shape of an S-like spiral. This radiant being dances to a gentle, easy waltz with some rhythmic play between twos and threes. … “One of my main aims in this suite was to give prominence to all five instruments, and in particular to bring out the melodic and expressive character of the horn and bassoon, often the cinderellas of woodwind ensembles.”

How to Avoid Huge Ships (2013) for flute, clarinet, English horn, bassoon and horn

Chipping Norton: Composers Edition, 2016?

A video introduction to the work is available on the composer’s website. (A recording and score has, apparently, been removed, unfortunately.) Premiered by the Atea Quintet as part of the second New Dots concert.

Although the composer doesn’t state it, the title comes from a real textbook for mariners. The book’s appearance on Amazon.com, however, led to a series of hilarious mock reviews which became a web legend. The quintet composition, from a quick listening, appears to be quite serious, though, and a very attractive if difficult work. Appropriate for a professional-level quintet. [ Andrew Brandt ]

The Dialect of Lunatic Hurricanes (2014)

For alto flute doubling piccolo, English horn, bass clarinet, horn and bassoon. Commissioned by the Britten Sinfonia for their Opus2014 Competition.

The title appears to be based on a poem, “Dialect of Hurricanes.” A translation is available on the Poetry Translation Centre. It seems the composer enjoys obscure literary references in his titles. [ Andrew Brandt ]

Wind Quintet in A-flat Major, Op. 14 (1903)

London: Faber Music, 1983

New York: G. Schirmer, 1983

Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire, England: Sky Dance Press, 2006

London: Boosey & Hawkes

Duration: 16:00. Movements: Allegro moderato; Adagio; Minuet (in canon) and trio; Air and variations. Although an early work, it was apparently not performed until 1982.

Although I have not performed this work, various reports of people who have read through the work expecting something along the lines of Holst’s Suites for band or The Planets have voiced their disappointment. Marsha Schweitzer, who is one of the few bassoonists I know who has performed this work several times, says: “It is introspective, and takes a while to grow on you. It helps if you make the most of the sudden mood changes in the slow movement — think opera, in particular, Puccini. The strength of the piece is its operatic use of the woodwind tone colors, as demonstrated at the end with a diminuendo to a stunning (if it’s in tune) sequence of A♭ major chords with the bassoon as the lowest, then the highest, and then, while still in the upper register, again the lowest, voice.” [ Andrew Brandt ]

For a work based on The Planets, see Hatch, Peter Endangered worlds for wind sextet, listed above, or Kara LaMoure”s arrangement of the Jupiter movement below.

Wien: Universal Edition

Not a concerto for winds but an 8-minute work for single winds and strings. A look at the score (see Pastorale d’ete, available for download from the International Music Score Library Project), shows the wind parts to be quite distinct from the strings and a bit soloistic. [Andrew Brandt]

Honour, Eric C., Jr. (1970- )

Flamingo Mozambique (1996, rev. 2000)

see http://www.erichonour.com/ . Duration: 6:30.

The composer supplied me with the following info on this work:
“‘Flamingo Mozambique’ derives its title from its use of the mozambique rhythm, which consists of 3 beats plus 3 beats plus 2 beats repeated over and over again. In the case of this work, this pattern is fragmented and presented in a variety of forms. The piece retains the drive and swing of Mozambique-based jazz while using a modern approach to harmonic language and structure. The music closes with a comical tribute to the traditional ending for a jazz tune in this style. This piece was composed in 1996 and premiered that year by a graduate woodwind quintet at
Northwestern University.”

Fantasia on a theme of Couperin (1958) for flute, oboe, English horn, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 2 horns

Novello & Co.

According to the composer, “The origin of this work was a commission by the London Wind Society in 1958 to compose a wind octet consisting of flute, oboe, and pairs of clarinets, horns and bassoons. In 1962 I revised this substantially to produce a new version for eleven solo strings…. This latest reworking adds a cor anglais to my original octet, and includes several metric and harmonic alterations of both previous versions. The theme is taken from the chromatic rising bass of Couperin’s famous keyboard ‘passacaille’ in B minor. It is quoted in the middle section of my Fantasia, in its original harmonisation. My own opening theme undersoes a gradual change towards this central point; then Couperin’s theme is developed and eventually brought back to a recapitulation of the opening statement.” [From An Annotated Guide to Wind Chamber Music by Rodney Winther.]

Toronto: Canadian Music Center

Duration: 15:00. Performers play from the score. Score and tape available from CMC. See: http://www.horwoodcomposer.com/index.htm

According to the composer: “This is the first of my works to incorporate found sounds from amusement parks (here motorized chains and roller coaster entry/exit platform commands). The original and preferred format of this work is for woodwind quintet and pre-recorded tape. In this version, the ‘live’ and ‘taped’ materials keep alternating and interrupting each other.” See the rest of the notes at http://www.horwoodcomposer.com/Electroacoustic/ExitToYourLeft.htm .

Wind Quintet, Op. 159 (1960, revised 1965)

New York: C.F. Peters, 1961, 1967

Dedicated to the University of Michigan Woodwind Quintet. Movements: Andante; Allegro; Largo; Lento. Duration: 17:00. The quintet begins and ends with sections of “senza misura” where each player progresses at their own pace.

Oddly, Contemporary Composers (St. James Press), the New Grove, the New Grove’s Dictionary of American Music, and Grove Music Online all list this opus as a quartet, which is incorrect. Baker’s Biographical and Arthur Cohn in “The Literature of Chamber Music” list this as a quintet, as does WorldCat, the Library of Congress and the Alan Hovhaness website: http://www.hovhaness.com/hovhaness_works.html. (The title, Wind Quintet, should have made it obvious.) Hovhaness, however, did write a Divertimento for wind quartet.

Wind Quintet (1957)

London: Ambache Editions or contact Diana Ambache, [email protected]

Duration: 20:00. Movements: 1. Lustig (Merrily): Comodo. 2. Trüb (Gloomy): Steadily. 3. Schwärmend (Rapturously): Tempo di valse comodo. 4. Mutig (Bravely). See: http://oboeclassics.com/~oboe3583/ambache/wHowe.htm#Wind Quintet for further program notes. Written for the principal winds of the Vienna Symphony.

Howe was a notable pianist and composer of her day who was also instrumental in creating the National Symphony Orchestra (of Washington, DC), the Chamber Music Society of Washington and the Society of American Women Composers. She received a composition diploma from the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore in 1922, where she studied with Gustave Strube who also wrote a woodwind quintet in 1930. So it is surprising how difficult it is to get good information about her music. The 1957 quintet is the only one of the quintets by Mary Howe mentioned in the list of archives in the New York Public Libary’s papers of Mary Howe. http://www.nypl.org/sites/default/files/archivalcollections/pdf/mushowe.pdf . [Andrew Brandt]

This quintet was commissioned by principal members of the Vienna Philharmonic, who participated in a reading of some of Mary Howe’s orchetra music while on tour in the United States. According to Diana Ambache, “The music is expressive and wide ranging, and shows a fine ear for instrumental colours. The first movement plays wittily with rustic-sounding themes; the second makes eloquent use of the horn’s melodic powers; the third is a faintly ironic Viennese waltz; and although the finale begins with a solemn chant, it develops with jazzy syncopations and Yankee-flavoured folk tunes. We gave the UK première in February 2003. The London Evening Standard described it as combining ‘a light, though undeniably refined, Romantic manner with a neo-classicism redolent of Hindemith and a gentle angularity that might have come from 1920s Stravinsky.’” See more info about Mary Howe in our article in our Roaring Twenties Woodwind Quintet series.
