Fun-damentals of Music (2004) for Woodwind Quintet with Audience Participation
MMB Music/
Randolph, Vt.: Walker Music Productions
Four Movements: Rhythm; Melody; Harmony; Form. Commissioned by the Equinox Chamber Players. May be performed with children or with general audiences.
According to the composer, “Each movement focuses on one basic component of music. According to the directions given by one of the members of the quintet, the audience will join the players by clapping (rhythms), humming (a melody), harmonizing (building chords) and raising hands, or perhaps standing up (!), (to identify formal sections and thematic recurrences).”
Encounters (2007)
Available from the composer’s website (see above) /
Maryland Heights, MO: Lauren Keiser Music,
According to the composer, “First Encounter” is an energetic greeting, or a first “hello.” The music is straightforward, as if walking up to one another for an introduction, with perhaps a slight dance approach. This leads to “Leisurely Encounter,” which is characterized by a relaxed tempo and blues style of playing. “Synchronized Encounter” is marked ‘very quickly’. The players need to be ‘in sync’ in order to navigate the mixed meters, with foot taps and other extra-musical events interspersed! “Familiar Encounter – a dance” comes at the end of the suite, when the players have become well acquainted. This movement allows the players to pair up for a series of dance interpretations of a well-known tune.
Off to the Races (2012)
Maryland Heights, Missouri: Lauren Keiser Music Publishing
Based on horse-related tunes: Stephen Foster’s ”Camptown Races,” the British folksong ”Stewball Was a Race Horse,” and ”The Home Stretch,” which is based on two familiar American Songs.

Wallach, Joelle (1946- )
Woodwind Quintet, O llama de amor viva (Oh, Living Flame of Love) (1988)
Duration: 5:20. Premiere performance: New Music for Young Ensembles Concert, Weill Recital Hall, New York, N.Y., Apr. 9, 1991. See also: http://www.joellewallach.com/ . A recording of the work is available on the site: http://joellewallach.com/composition/woodwind-quintet-o-llama-de-amor-viva/ .
According to the composer: ‘The subtitle of Joelle Wallach’s Woodwind Quintet, “O llama de amor viva” (Oh, living flame of love), is the first line of a poem by the Spanish mystic, Saint John of the Cross. The music depicts fire’s gentle flicker and sudden conflagration as metaphor for the varying intensity of consuming spiritual love. The brief rising phrase each instrument breathes in the short slow introduction is a single, graceful lick of flame. As the piece progresses through rapid changes of tempo, texture and mood, the phrases ignite, flaring together or blazing separately, creating climaxes, flashing toward a final flushed moment of glowing repose.’
This work won first prize in the New Music for Young Ensembles Composition Competition, but for a very advanced young ensemble. Professional ensembles would find plenty to chew on in this work, and certainly on several other works Wallach has written for various ensembles, including a sextet for winds and piano and a heart-breaking Octet “From the Forest of Chimneys” based on a visit to Birkenau. Nobody would ever describe Joelle Wallach’s style as frivolous. In fact, she may be one of the most thoughtful and unique composers I’ve heard in a while. Chamber musicians should definitely check out her website and listen to a few of her pieces, then schedule them for performance! [ Andrew Brandt ]

Eugene J. Weigel was an American bandmaster who, in 1936, first had his Ohio State University band create the word “Ohio” in script. The band continues that tradition to this day. I wouldn’t recommend doing that with a woodwind quintet, though. (Among other logistical problems, there would inevitably be fights over who dots the ‘i”.) [Andrew Brandt]

Uses clarinet in A. Movements: Bright and bold; Semplice; Bright and bold again Written for the New York Woodwind Quintet.
Frank Daykin reviewed for the New York Concert Review: “A work that makes use of the color palette of the winds to differentiate the strands of counterpoint…. Wernick‘s use of klangfarbenmelodie (sound-colors melody), in which the same pitch is repeated by (or traded to) another instrument was remarkable for the way in which the transfers were subtle: one could hardly tell where one instrument began and the other left off.”

Sinfonia Concertante No. 4 for clarinet, flute, oboe, horn, 2 bassoons and cello with orchestra of strings, 2 oboes and 2 horns.
Microfilm copy is in London: British Museum of the original publication. (A copy of the microfilm is also available at the University of Iowa Rita Benton Music Library, The University of Augsberg, and probably at a few other locations.)
Parts available from International Music Score Library Project, https://imslp.org/wiki/Simphonie_concertante_in_F_major_(Widerkehr%2C_Jacques)
Movements: Allegro moderato; Rondo et Var[iation]s. Cover page of the printed score included dedications [probably made by the publisher or editor] to Lefèvre, Hugot, Sallantin, Frédéric Duvernoy, Ozi, Delcambre & Levasseur le jeune. Note that the clarinet part is for C clarinet.
Widerkehr wrote 12-15 sinfonia concertantes around 1800 in Paris. This one was was his most ambitious as far as the size of the solo ensemble. Note that this sinfonia concertante, which features all the instruments of a woodwind quintet (plus a second bassoon and a cello), appears to have been written before any of the Reicha and Danzi quintets! Although the IMSLP database lists their edition of the printed publication of this work as around 1800, that seem unlikely since the cover page includes dedications to professors of the Conservatoire, some of whom hadn’t been born in 1800. I’d guess the date of publication to be in the late 19th century. ¶ Groves Online also lists a series of Widerkehr quintets for flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon and piano, but I have not found any edition of them. There are also trios for flute, horn and bassoon as well as trios for flute, oboe and bassoon by Widerkehr, which have modern publications. [ Andrew Brandt ]

New York: Leonard Carroll
Premiered by the New York Woodwind Quintet March 20, 1960 at the Memorial Art Gallery in Rochester, New York.
This quintet was also known as the “Aloha” Suite because it was written for a farewell performance by bassoonist Bernard Garfield who was leaving to join the Philadelphia Orchestra. According to Samuel Baron’s journal, three of the movements are beautiful and serious, and the fourth is a joke for Garfield. [ Amy L. Suite for Woodwind Quintet (1956)
Wilder Music, 1972
Copy in the Indiana University Music Library, Bloomington.
Alec Wilder composed this work while visiting with the New York Woodwind Quintet during their summer internship at the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee. Each of the quintet’s members is featured in one movement. Wilder was a frequent visitor with the New York Woodwind Quintet and often would dash off some ideas for the quintet, or arrangements of other composer’s music. He even went so far as to write several barbership quartet arrangements sung by four members of the quintet at parties and receptions. The Quintet, in turn, premiered several of his works and performed them on international tours. [source: Amy L. Likar, The New York Woodwind Quintet: A Continuing Legacy, Ohio State University, 1999]

The World’s Most Beautiful Girls (1955) for woodwind quintet
Newton Centre, Massachusetts: Margun Music ?
Unsure if this was ever published. “The World’s Most Beautiful Girls’ was the title for a series of annual short movies by Universal International featuring winners of the Miss Universe Beauty Contest, made, apparently, before such things were broadcast on TV. My guess is that the woodwind quintet was probably based on sketches composed either for the pageant or the movie. Listed in the book Alec Wilder by Philip Lambert, 2013. American Composers series.

Recorded by the Manhattan Wind Quintet, of which Mr. Wisner is the bassoonist.
The Nocturne was written in memory of the composer’s mother: “My objective was to commemorate my mother with an enjoyable and romantic piece, the type she would have enjoyed. The music of mine that she liked best involved uncomplicated key signatures and pretty melodies. I have incorporated one of her favorite melodies into this Nocturne: the “Children’s Prayer” from Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel.” The work is recorded by the Manhattan Wind Quintet.

Wood, Thomas (1892-1950)
The Brewhouse at Bures (1928)
London: Stainer & Bell, 1929
Thomas Wood was a British composer who had several passions in his life. Being the son of a Master Mariner, he loved the sea and composed many vocal works about it. He traveled to Australia and was a student of Australian culture and folk-music. He, of course, loved music. He was also almost blind. And he was fascinated by ghosts. From the title of his only quintet, one would think it was about a local pub. It could be. But after he married, he moved into his wife’s estate in Parsonage Hall, in Bures, Suffolk, which had a wing called “The Brewhouse.” According to the composer and other visitors, it was haunted and there were several stories about hearing a man and woman arguing, where no man and woman existed. Without knowing the composition, it is difficult to tell which brewhouse he was referring to, but I think it was the haunted one. Woolfenden, Guy(1937-2016)
Serenade for Sophia for double woodwind quintet
Oxfordshire, England: Ariel Music, 2002
Movements: Intrada; Dance; Finale.
The composer writes: “Serenade for Sophia was written to celebrate the birth of the composer’s first grandchild, Sophia Isobel, in March 2001 and is dedicated to her with love. The work is scored for double wind quintet with no doublings, and begins with a short formal Intrada celebrating the happy event of Sophia’s arrival. The Dance is melodic and friendly music that hints at warmer climates, and taps into the rich culture of Sophia’s Jamaican friends and relations. The Finale plays on the juxtaposition of two contrasted moods: firstly a reflective, somewhat troubled idea, followed by a happy Allegretto passage; the reflective mood becomes more espressive and is treated canonically, the sun once again breaks through the clouds, and shines even more brightly in a joyous coda.”
Reflections, Serenade No. 2, for double woodwind quintet
Oxfordshire, England: Ariel Music, 2002
Movements: Allegro moderato; Andante espressivo in memoriam William Waterhouse; Andante con moto: Allegro subito.
The composer notes: “Shortly after I began work in earnest on Reflections, my second serenade for wind dectet, the great English bassoonist, William Waterhouse, died. We attended the same school (Whitgift in South Croydon), and I followed his remarkable career as he climbed to the top of the profession both as a performer and a teacher. He was loved by all for his wit, wisdom and scholarship. ¶ “The second movement begins and ends with a bassoon solo in Bill’s memory. The outer movements which frame this ‘In memoriam’ are reflections on the witty, humorous side of Bill and my own memories of a happy childhood with musical parents – my father led a dance band and my mother was the daughter of a church organist and sang rather well. ¶ “Reflections was commissioned by Simon Payne and the Oxford Sinfonia, to whom the work is dedicated with affection. The first performance took place at St Mary’s Church, High Street, Oxford on 26th April 2008.”
Prelude, in memoriam & Finale, sextet for woodwind quintet and bass clarinet
Oxfordshire, England: Ariel Music, 2002
Movements: Prelude; In Memoriam; Finale.
The composer shares: “This work was commissioned by English Serenata and received its first performance in May 1987. The sextet is dedicated to the memory of Howard Walker, clarinettist and founder member of English Serenata, following his tragic death in a car accident.”

Into the Evening Air (2013)
New York: Associated Music Publishers, for rental or download, depending on location, see http://www.musicsalesclassical.com/composer/work/49361
Commissioned for the Boston Symphony Chamber Players for their 50th anniversary season and premiered on February 9, 2014, performed by Elizabeth Rowe, flute; John Ferrillo, oboe; William R. Hudgins, clarinet; Richard Svoboda, bassoon; and James Sommerville, horn. The same concert also featured Schuller’s Games for woodwind quintet and string quintet.
According to reviewer, Jeremy Eichler in the Boston Globe, Nov. 2, 2014, this work is “…a brief but important new wind quintet by Yehudi Wyner. Into the evening air takes its title from a line in a Wallace Stevens poem, ‘Final Soliloquy of the Interior Paramour’ Wyner’s score is a stunner, full of a watchful, silvery beauty. This music – billowing, airy, and deceptively light – seems to perfectly reflect the quiet glow and calm wisdom of this late poem. And yet, … Wyner actually composed his work (all but its title) before reading a word of the poem. Both score and text, in any case, are colored in subtle half-tints and both speak obliquely of ultimate things. In the score’s final pages the music’s corporeality, such as it is, seems to slowly dissolve. A final upward-leaping flute line is questing, interrogative.”
